Can someone explain to me why POC

don't back Bernie? People like me who are Asian have no interest in him. Are we stupid? Why is his movement young kids and basically white people?

I'll tell you why I think we dislike him. We busted our asses to make it and we hate people who whine and blame everyone else. We are too busy working and we don't feel sorry about ourselves.

I am a POC too. Do we cancel each other out?

93. yes I saw that piece about Bernie winning diverse states

That is what you get when you send an English professor to do the job of a statistician.. first of all, where are your stats from the caucuses. What percentages went for Sanders.

Just because a state is diverse, and he won it ,does not mean his coalition is diverse. A Repug may win Georgia, which has alot of AA. Does that mean that the Repugs coalition has a AA coalition. Couldn' t the repug have mostly white people vote for him.

With the low turnout numbers of a caucus who is to say that the caucus sample is representative of the whole state.

167. This is weak

It didn't matter if he signed up 5 minutes ago; his point is sound. And unanswered. If an assertion is made, it needs to be backed up or abandoned. A racist republican can win a state with a predominately AA populace. This does not in any way imply a diverse coalition obviously. The claim that is does however, needs to be backed up or abandoned.

No one but Hawaiian's care who voted in Hawaii. Who cares who voted in any caucus state. The are the only election contest's where enthusiasm counts more than actual votes. Why else would Sanders do well in them.

This typical dismissal of "fellow" liberals and independents is a prominent feature of the Clinton's smug, uninspired, idea-less campaign and her supporters.

... and just plain dumb.

But Sanders used them to his advantage.

It is kind of like calling the super delegate undemocratic and then trying to flip them when it became clear that was the only way can win.

199. How do you "use" a caucus?

So not liking super delegates means one shouldn't use them...even tho' they exist and are an essential part of the process?

Explain...

He already eschewed big donors and super pacs. Should he give up the actual voting process too?

203. Wrong term, Sanders "benifited" from the undemocratic caucuses

And Bernie would have been forced to accept PAC money had he made it to the general election or he would have been overwhelmed negative advertisements churned out by the PAC's funded by the Koch brothers and other conservative billionaire contributors because Bernie's small contributors could have never been able to pace.

So, based on the websites you used against Sanders, like tomatoebubble, I think we all know where you stand with POC

I know, I know, you "don't agree with it but people will say" argument is your retort. If your ok using neo-Nazi, anti- Semetic hate sites to attack a Democratic candidate than so be it I guess:

202. Hey are you the one who is unable to come up with a original response

.... to a post of your own and instead likes to dredge up old posts?

And by the way, that was only one of the several sites I sighted on that post. There are many other legitimate media sites such a Politico and CNN which posted near identical articles about your candidate. When Politico and CNN are saying the very same things about Bernie Sanders' past exploits as a "neo-Nazi, anti-Semetic hate site", that doesn't look good for your candidate.

It is part of the historical record that Sanders used a trip to Russia as his honeymoon and that he traveled to Nicaragua for the 5th anniversary of the Soviet sponsored Sandinista revolution. In addition, while he was there he had a private audience with Danial Ortega, all at the height of the cold war. It is also clear that he traveled to Cuba a few months later and after the trip praised Castro's government in the interview. (You can Google the interview and listen to it yourself.) Of course, Sanders forgot to mention that while he was visiting both countries the Sandinistas and Castro were depriving their populations of their basic civil rights and torturing their opponents to death. It is also true, as cited by numerous sources, that Sanders displayed a Soviet flag in his mayor's office in Burlington, reportedly in honor of Burlington's sister city in the USSR, an arrangement between the two cities he solidified while on the trip to the USSR with his brand new wife. Had all of this been widely known at the time, many in this country erroneously would have viewed Bernie as a sympathizer at best.

While all of this happened long ago, the vast majority of American voter are unaware of these actives; Not many people cared at the time what the mayor of a very small city in Maine was doing. However even now these exploits by a future Presidential candidate would seem dubious at best to large segments of the population. There is no doubt in my mind that the Republican Swift Boat machine, if given the chance, would make them appear positively damning.

Hillary never mentioned these exploits because she didn't have to. If there is a silver lining for Sanders supporters in Bernie losing the nomination, it is that the vast majority of the US population will never become aware of Sanders' early adventures on the "dark side".

206. If posting from tomatoebubble is "ok" with you

Who am I to argue.

That you are trading in right-wing memes and hate speech is in little doubt. Why?
You are posting websites as sources that are known neo-Nazi, anti-semetic, holocaust-denying hate-sites like tomatoebubble (that FYI, has very choice words about HRC as well).

More importantly, your entire rant is debunked falsehoods. First, it was not "Russia" when he took his trip in 1988, it was the USSR. It was the same year a sitting US president gave a speech from Red Square.
Lastly, while yes the trip was taken right after they were married, it was not a honeymoon as they were part of a 12-person delegation, traveling to a sister-city on city business. 10 seconds of research would validate that very important distinction:
https://www.rt.com/usa/320098-bernie-sanders-ussr-honeymoon/

"Had all this been widely known at the time"? You mean, besides the entire city of Burlington and the entire state of Vermont and the international press that reported on it?
He had a Soviet flag in his office? Sorry Senator McCarthy, is that against the law? (FYI, I could find zero MSM news stories about a USSR flag in his mayor's office but I would suspect it had to do with their sister-city, not because he was a commie-loving American hater)

While I am not going to get into some long drawn-out debate about Nicaragua and Ortega, the FSLN freed their country from a brutal dictator. The long and illegal involvement of the CIA and their propping up of a brutal dictator that led to the formation of the FSLN and let us not forget the CIA-backed Contras and the awesome Iran-Contra scandal. Your rant on them and Cuba sounds more like a Raygun-era neocon than a Democrat.
Actually, your whole rant could be right out of the neocon playbook. When you Google the things you bring up, people like George Will and a list that gets worse from there, pops up.

Continue as you will but don't be surprised when your called out for actions like posting sites like tomatoebubble and that it haunts you when you say things that hark back to those type of posts.

66. I don't own my own business but I work at least 60 hours a week.

The boss likes it that way - they prefer paying overtime to paying benefits or giving another person a job.

I grew up beyond poor and my husband was so poor that their xmas gifts were few and then from a Goodwill.

So shall we pity you or are you one of those who believes people just have to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and move one.

You do realize there are people who due to illness or disability can't "just get over it".

Oh wow so you are asian and you were poor - you my friend were not alone. Many of us here were poor and suffered horribly.

Clinton doesn't care about any of that......

She would like to "bring us all to heel" and than do what she wills.

EDITED TO ADD: and as a single mother I got food from the dumpster to feed myself and my child - didn't get welfare - didn't get free aid. Worked two jobs and hoped things would work out. So you were poor...so what - that does not win any argument you have made today.

And there are millions of us across this country who work just as hard as you do.

Please don't do this. You're better than that.

And your candidate needs Bernie supporters in the fall if she does get nominated, so you don't help her by posting things like this.

65. But it wasn't said by a RW'er. He said he's an Asian who has worked his ass off.

So answer his question or shut up. Why should he pay more taxes for Bernie's agenda, and to send your kids to college since many of us have scrimped and saved to send our own kids to college while foregoing new cars and houses we couldn't afford to save for our own children's education.

And just because Bernie says something, that doesn't make it true even if Starry eyed groupies are feeling the Bern. However, Bernie has said that everyone WILL pay more taxes. He just claims that we will pay less in health care benefits. Well I'm not willing to bank on that offset since The GOP Congress will have a say in that debatE. besides even Bernie has said that he won't get his agenda through in his first term and if he can't get his agenda enacted in his first term, I guarantee you there will be no SECOND term for Bernie should he even get a first term.

You sound like the talking heads on Fox. I am not paying for [fill in the blank]. I pay taxes and am happy to pay them. I believe if we all chip in WE ALL RISE!!!

After WWII the reason the economy grew was because so many veterans were educated FOR FREE!!! I was a single mother and contributed as much as I could to my child's education - but he has just finished paying off the loans and he is over 40. I never owed a car when he was wee because it was more important to have food then pay insurance on a silly car. I either walked or rode a bike.

So take you very sad stories and you indignant pride and think about others....

P.S. And just because Hillary says something there is no guarantee that the Republicans will EVER give her anything. You think they stonewalled President Obama - wait till you see what they do to Hillary. Believe it or not Hillary is no magical creature.

Without a care about the workers or the poor.

He also signed the welfare act that deciminated the poor.

We suffer now because we have many under or uneducated people who can't find work and we have nothing to build.

Fixing the infrastructure would employ many - yet we won't (or can't) do it.

Rebuilding schools and providing 21st century education would change much.

But I see you are a true Hillary supporter in that we must stay the course and continue waiting...for what I am not sure.

154. Why do you keep touting right wing talking points? Taxes... really?

If you bothered to look into it you'd see that the only people who are going to pay more taxes are the very rich and also that everyone is going to get many more benefits under Bernie's plan, like single-payer health care and free college.

Why are you against what the Dem Party has stood for forever. It only started favoring corporations when Mr. Clinton embraced the DLC and NAFTA.

When you and the OP spout right wing talking points about those scary taxes all you are doing is reinforcing the fact that the right wing of the Dem Party is too corporate and has a Republican mindset when it comes to policy. Just like Obama, the right wing of the Dem Party are really moderate Republicans. If you hate the Democratic Party platform so much you should consider switching parties. Bernie is the most representative of the real Dem Platform there is. The fact that you mock him so much is telling and sad.

P.s. Doesn't matter who says it, whether they are a Dem or GOP, it's still a right wing talking point. There's far too many right wing talking points and tactics on DU lately, but that's where the right wing of the Dem Party wants to go... sad that it's allowed since this is supposed to be a Dem board.

They are also mostly over the age of 40 to.

Its about a 50/50 split between men and women.

As for the rallies, let's just call it like it is.. those of us over 40 don't necessarily feel like standing in line for hours to see a speech we can watch on the internet, so those tend to be dominated by the younger crowd.

55. Your slam on Sanders is a cheap shot. He

argues more forcefully than anyone in many years of U.S. American politics for economic democracy and the dignity of hard work relative to fair pay.

If you've missed that point, you've missed just about everything.

53. Well, this thread will go well

I do think the narrative of stagnant wages is the key reason he's had trouble connecting past white voters, though. Stagnant wages aren't a narrative that's applicable to minorities. Even though African Americans and Hispanics still make less than whites, their incomes have been rising while whites' (males' at least) have been stagnant. The weird bit of psychology is that that situation makes white people feel angry and cheated.

Hispanic incomes and black incomes are higher than they were in 1991. White incomes aren't. For that matter they aren't higher than they were in 1971.

White male wage stagnation is a problem, a real one. But it's not the problem facing minorities as a community. And white people are going to have to come to terms with being just another interest group at some point...

I am 60 years old - if I waited I would still be waiting.

I do for myself - there are many among us who can't do for themselves - shall we not aid them.

If we provide FREE education will we all not gain from it?

If a woman cries and we turn our backs on her are we all not evil?

It is my belief that Democrats are this!

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt

"...Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors. Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths and encourage the arts and commerce.

Let both sides unite to heed in all corners of the earth the command of Isaiah--to "undo the heavy burdens . . . (and) let the oppressed go free..."
- John F. Kennedy

And finally...my favorite...

Jimmy Carter said, "If you don't want your tax dollars to help the poor, then stop saying that you want a country based on Christian values. Because you don't!"

86. There are good reasons why Sanders is not appealing to African American and other voters

There are good reasons why the demographics are not working for Sanders and why many voters including some African American voters are not supporting Sanders. Demographics are important in that this explains one of the big divides between Sanders supporters and Clinton supporters. There is a vast difference in how Sanders supporters and Sanders view President Obama and how other Democrats view President Obama. I admit that I am impressed with the amount accomplished by President Obama in face of the stiff GOP opposition to every one of his proposals and I personally believe that President Obama has been a great President. It seems that this view colors who I am supporting in the primary http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/clinton-sanders-obama_us_56aa378de4b05e4e3703753a?utm_hp_ref=politics

But lurking behind this argument about the future is a dispute that's really about the past. It’s a debate over what Obama accomplished in office -- in particular, how significant those accomplishments really are. And it's been simmering on the left for most of the last seven years.

On one side of this divide are activists and intellectuals who are ambivalent, disappointed or flat-out frustrated with what Obama has gotten done. They acknowledge what they consider modest achievements -- like helping some of the uninsured and preventing the Great Recession from becoming another Great Depression. But they are convinced that the president could have accomplished much more if only he’d fought harder for his agenda and been less quick to compromise.

They dwell on the opportunities missed, like the lack of a public option in health care reform or the failure to break up the big banks. They want those things now -- and more. In Sanders, they are hearing a candidate who thinks the same way.

On the other side are partisans and thinkers who consider Obama's achievements substantial, even historic. They acknowledge that his victories were partial and his legislation flawed. This group recognizes that there are still millions of people struggling to find good jobs or pay their medical bills, and that the planet is still on a path to catastrophically high temperatures. But they see in the last seven years major advances in the liberal crusade to bolster economic security for the poor and middle class. They think the progress on climate change is real, and likely to beget more in the future.

It seems that many of the Sanders supporters hold a different view of President Obama which is also a leading reason why Sanders is not exciting African American voters. Again, it may be difficult for Sanders to appeal to African American voters when one of the premises of his campaign is that Sanders does not think that President Obama is a progressive or a good POTUS.

Again, I am not ashamed to admit that I like President Obama and think that he has accomplished a great deal which is why I do not mind Hillary Clinton promising to continue President Obama's legacy. There are valid reasons why many non-African American democrats (myself included) and many African American Democratic voters are not supporting Sanders.

I understand why Sanders supporters dislike talking about demographics but the fact remain that Sanders supporters tend to not like President Obama and that dislike affects the amount of support that Sanders is getting from certain demographic groups.

89. I busted my ass to make it, and I made it, and I don't like whiners.

We just have a different definition of the word "whiner."

I don't see how you can call me a whiner when I am not complaining for myself. I am content with what I have managed to achieve in life. I am concerned about the desperate predicament in which I see other people getting stuck. I am concerned about children who don't get enough to eat. I am concerned about children who are put to bed in a relative's house, awakened in the middle of the night, and put to bed again in the house that is technically theirs, then awakened again at 6 so they can catch a school bus for an hour's bumpy ride before the school day. I am concerned about children who are homeless. I am concerned about Black people who get shot, or their heads slammed against the pavement, or put in jail for life, for no real reason. I am concerned about young people who are forced to ruin their chances to get a mortgage on a decent home in which to raise children, until they are really too old to begin parenting, because of draconian student loan policies. I am concerned about people with carefully, arduously won technical skills, who are studiously ignored so the overlords can import desperately poor people (who probably would rather stay at home if they could get enough food there) whom the overlords sense they can mistreat as much as they please. I am concerned about people of various backgrounds who are deliberately given what their overlords believe to be just enough to keep body and soul together for them, but which is really not enough to do even that because their overlords are too sheltered and cossetted to understand what the real costs of living are in our country, or our world.

106. Because they know better. They remember the Clinton years despite what the media tries to say.

More blacks moved out of poverty than at any other time and many are still reaping the benefits of good paying jobs with good benefits that afforded them a good retirement. Many people loss their homes during the Bush administration and their jobs too, This didn't happen to them until the Bush years that carried over into the Obama years. You can shout about "bubbles" vulture capitalists and corruption and all the rest. What blacks remember is that under the Clinton administration and improved FEMA helped them put their lives together after catastrophic natural disasters, black farmers were compensated for being left out of the farm subsidies tho white farmers, they could get a good job and job mobility was not a problem, they could send their children to college and get good help from he government. They remember Bill Clinton's cabinet that looked like America and they remember how corporate boards began to open seats to blacks and Latinos. They remember that the Clintons were comfortable in their presence and showed respect and compassion. They remember that the crime bill was a direct response to many of their calls for helping to rid their neighborhoods of crime and black on black deaths from gang and gun violence. Despite the heartbreaking aftermath of the bill, it wasn't intended for the disparate outcomes that resulted. They also remember that neither Clinton was mean-spirited despite the attacks coming to them from the media and the RW haters.

What they remember is that their real hardships began in the early 2000's and after 9/11 their economic and social lives spiraled downward as Affirmative Action and enforcement of non-discrimination in the workplace and in hiring was all but erased from the laws. That's why.

114. PoC see his campaign's weak overtures as pandering, is why

Yes, Bernie Sanders, the System Is Rigged—What Else Is New?

Despite a strong message about economic inequality, Sanders has never managed to be competitive with African-American Democrats in primary states. Many have argued ad nauseam about why the Sanders campaign has struggled with black voters, and the arguments generally fall into two equally simplistic and nominally insulting categories: 1) Black folks are foolishly loyal to the Clintons in some form of electoral Stockholm syndrome; or 2) Black folks don’t ultimately know what’s best for them and don’t know Sanders well enough to realize that he’s the best choice.

I’ve avoided stepping into this fray because not only are both arguments faulty, but neither one in any way reflects the black Democrats and independents I know. The real reason Sanders has failed to connect with many mainline African-American Democrats is what happened at the Nevada convention May 14. Sanders and his surrogates represent a discomfiting liberal white privilege that has always made African-American voters feel ill at ease, even when ultimate goals are in sync.

180. Maybe they will read it as well.

There are many reasons for POC to support Sanders. What you pointed out makes sense considering the direction of the op. Seems it's nothing more than an attempt to muddy the waters while using POC. A really shady tactic we have seen too often this primary season.

175. Cool, the anti-semite posted an OP! Why not call Sanders a "cranky old Jew" again? nt

188. Progressive voters tend to like Sanders' agenda. n/t

Clinton's there for more conservative voters, and for those who otherwise wanted to play it safe.

193. This is what happens

When two sides of the so called base can't put their differences aside in order to win an election. For the past year all we have seen from Left, right, conservative, liberal is infighting, name calling and promises of destruction. If we can't put our differences aside and stop the personal attacks, Trump will win, and both Hillary and Bernie supporters will get what they deserve.

We're supposed to be on the same side here. Let's remember that.

197. There are so many ways I could respond to this post

but I don't even know where to start.

I'll settle for moseying on off to a different thread because there is just too much here and not nearly enough time to express the joy in my life that I'm not you.

205. Interesting observation. It's mostly white kids who like Bernie among my friends as well.

Way back in the fall, I remember a few of them saying things like "he reminds me of my grandpa" or "my great uncle". There is certainly some identification with his base. I know that being Hispanic, the only person Sanders ever reminded me of was the mean old man next door in all the sitcoms.

207. Interesting observation.

Do you take all your cultural cues from TV sitcoms?

That's great. Say "hi" to Mr. Furley for me.

208. amongst my friends it's older white gay guys that like Hillary

Most of my female and minority friends like Bernie. all this is anecdotal and means nothing just not the same as the narrative you here on who supports who.

209. I'm a Black Latino woman...your statement sounds like my mum. Who is a Republican.

As a note I'm a Black Latino (Haitian) woman who's 35 and is an independent (leaning Democrat). My mother was raised in Haiti and I was born there. She believes what you believe. I don't believe that...there's more to who we are and what we and what we've experienced.
