Gun Control Group Backs Hillary Clinton and Pledges Help With Primary

A major gun control group has endorsed Hillary Clinton, offering a lift to her campaign in a tighter-than-expected primary race in California and as she tries to pivot to a general election matchup with Donald J. Trump.

The group, Everytown for Gun Safety, announced its endorsement through a statement released early on Friday, the day after its National Gun Violence Awareness Day campaign.

“Gun Sense Voters have a champion in Hillary Clinton,” John Feinblatt, the president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said in the statement. “Our litmus test is simple: does a candidate side with the public or with the gun lobby? Hillary Clinton passes that test with flying colors — pushing back against the N.R.A.’s extreme ‘guns for everyone, everywhere’ agenda, and ushering in a new political calculus that saving lives from gun violence is a winning issue.”

The group said it had waited to fully evaluate the candidates and to learn its members’ preferences before making an endorsement, which comes months after three other gun control groups issued a statement calling Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Mrs. Clinton’s Democratic rival, the wrong candidate on gun control.

Such a description of the NRA is hyperbole and fear mongering.

In truth it is the fear mongering and hyperbole that I despise the most about the NRA even as I agree with protecting access to firearms among the law abiding and mentally stable.

And Protecting civil liberties should be an interest of HRC supporters too.

that I really can't wrap my head around after 8 years away from the US. The gun thing, which didn't seem so weird when I left, is just unthinkable to me now. The fact that the US had more mass shootings than there are DAYS IN THE YEAR in 2015, and STILL no reasonable gun control laws passed? That is shocking. And the rest of the world finds it utterly bizarre.

Some guy on Reddit made up an extremely wide-open definition of "mass shootings." Certain media folk ran with this definition (ratings, baby...). Mass shootings of the sort most people identify with the term are far less common. In fact, according to an article in Mother Jones citing the federal government's definition, there were six.

That's six more than there should be...but the real problem with gun violence in the US isn't rampage killings, it's ordinary, garden-variety homicide, sometimes drug- or gang-related, sometimes domestic violence. Moreover, 2/3 of US gun deaths are suicides. We may have a gun violence problem...but we have an even greater problem with neglect of our mental healthcare system.

There are many things to criticize the NRA about, but they don't have a ‘guns for everyone, everywhere’ agenda".

They have regularly said that they support laws prohibiting violent criminals and those who are dangerous due to mental illness given due process.

And sometimes that's the best you have.

Again, I don't like much of the their hyperbolic, fear mongering distortions just as i don't like the same from gun control organizations.

I really thought the NRA board directors were going to get rid of him after Sandy Hook, but because he crushed the massive gun control push led by Joe Biden he is more powerful and entrenched within the organization than ever.

My only hope now is that he dies of some natural cause.
