Clinton hopes to strike gold in pivotal vote (AKA Bernie gets votes because he promises FREE STUFF!)

California or bust? Clinton hopes to strike gold in pivotal vote
JAMES OLIPHANT AND DAN WHITCOMB
Reuters

If Hillary Clinton ends up losing California to Bernie Sanders, it will be because of voters like Nallely Perez.

Perez personifies what a Clinton supporter was supposed to look like: a 24-year-old Latina who grew up idolizing the former first lady as a groundbreaking woman in politics. But when she votes in California’s Democratic presidential nominating contest on Tuesday, Perez will be supporting Sanders.

“Everything that I would stand for, he has said it,” said Perez, a student at California State University, Long Beach, who said she likes Sanders' promises of tuition-free college and universal healthcare. “We found our voice in him.”

The area around Long Beach, part of the 47th congressional district in California, has emerged as a key battleground. Sanders campaigned there a week ago; Clinton was in the area on Friday and may return again before Tuesday's vote.

The large minority population might be expected to translate into an advantage for Clinton, who has consistently shown strength with such groups. But a Reuters reporter who toured the area observed an abundance of Sanders supporters.

How the Republican Obsession With 'Free Stuff' Could Backfire
Sahil Kapur
Bloomberg
October 19, 2015 — 5:00 AM EDT

It has become a familiar Republican refrain. Senator Marco Rubio on Wednesday called the first Democratic debate a contest over “who was going to give away the most free stuff.” New Jersey Governor Chris Christie quipped Friday in New Hampshire, “There's gonna be more free stuff for more people than you can even imagine sitting and listening to Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton and the rest of the crew up there.”

Last month, Jeb Bush characterized Democrats' message to African-American voters as “get in line and we'll take care of you with free stuff.” A few days earlier, Senator Rand Paul mockingly accused Sanders of promising voters “free stuff.” In 2012, Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting Mitt Romney told a voter, “If you're looking for more free stuff, vote for the other guy.”

Ted Cruz Invokes ‘Free Stuff’ Dogwhistle
KIRA LERNER JAN 19, 2016 4:29 PM
Think Progress

During a campaign stop in Washington, NH on Monday, Sadowski asked Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz what he would do about the current lack of federally mandated paid family leave. Cruz, who has previously said employers should be allowed to deny their employees paid family leave, said that politicians should not promise “free stuff.”

“There’s no doubt that all of us would like to see everyone have paid family leave,” the candidate said. “That would be a good thing. But here’s the problem. Politicians love to campaign on giving away free stuff. It’s very good politics.”

He specifically pointed to Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, who has called for college tuition to be free.

“Giving away free stuff is very easy for politicians to do, but the simplest rule of economics is TANSTAAFL — there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch,” Cruz said. “Anything a politician gives you, he must first take from you. And so if you have the federal government mandate paid medical leave, what that ends up doing is driving up the cost of labor for low-income workers.”

The OP quotes a California college student and projects a trend in California. Of course college students will vote for Sanders. He's offering them everything despite the fact that he can't deliver. Re-read the OP again so you can better follow along.

Carson swipes Sanders at Christian college
Jonathan Easley November 11, 2015, 12:38 pm
The Hill

Ben Carson took a shot at Bernie Sanders in an address to students at the nation’s largest Christian college on Wednesday, warning against “unscrupulous politicians” offering free college that will add to the national debt and hasten “the destruction of the nation.”

“It becomes easy to swallow things. If you don’t understand our financial situation and someone comes along and says, ‘free college for everybody,’ they’ll say, ‘oh how wonderful,’ and have no idea they’re talking about hastening the destruction of the nation.”

“There is nothing that’s really free,” Carson said Wednesday, joking that the nation’s founders would “stroke out” to learn about the current state of the debt and deficit.

Sanders made his own appearance at Liberty University in September, making the case that there’s a moral obligation to address income inequality and racial injustice

The Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont senator has proposed making college education free for students in the U.S by having the federal government and states pay for it.

like we have in Germany, Denmark, or France.

Whereas the other candidate represents people like yourself who seem to believe only rich people deserve an education and those who are willing to work as indentured slaves for the rest of their lives.

That's why female hispanics like the one cited in the OP support Mr Sanders.

a Hillary district and quote a college student and suggest that it's a trend that applies to the overall population in that district. Some of you chose to argue the merits of free college tuition when that was not my point at all. My reading comprehension is just fine, thank you.

as opposed to the other candidate who somehow has managed to rally the party establishment around 'identity politics' in lieu of such basic and important demands like free college tuition and universal healthcare.

If your reading comprehension were fine, you would have understood the first sentence in the OP:

If Hillary Clinton ends up losing California to Bernie Sanders, it will be because of voters like Nallely Perez.

Perez personifies what a Clinton supporter was supposed to look like: a 24-year-old Latina who grew up idolizing the former first lady as a groundbreaking woman in politics. I laugh every single time someone who claims to be a Dem repeats Ron or Rand Paul talking points. It's truly hilarious & if you think free college isn't on the mind of many millenials, many of whom will be enslaved to student debt for the rest of their lives, you're sadly mistaken. They are voting for best meets their needs and represents them.
