Election rant about being a millennial

I'm 25 so I'm a millennial. Everyone for trump and everyone for HRC that I know treats me like I'm either a child or I'm retarded. I'm really losing my patience with the insults. In fact it's so bad I don't even know if I'm gunna stay with either party. I've always been a democrat. I have not and never will vote for a republican. The attacks are vicious and its all because of my fucking age!

Also this is not a winning strategy. If any of the other young people are treated half as bad as I have been this election than HRC has no chance of winning the general.

1. Ok this is a troll right?

It's spelled "millennial" and "retarded" (which is no longer an appropriate term) and either you're remarkably poorly educated or BSing us.

It's not your age, it's the evidence to hand that you are not very informed. So why should anyone care what you feel or think about politics?

I thought BSers thought Hilary supporters were stupid and uninformed sheeple.

Also HRC doesn't need your vote, and I doubt you've ever voted before.

31. I had more sence than you at 25. I had gotten back from the Vietnam war 4 years before.

I was called baby killer, spat on, could not get a job if I put on an application I was a Vietnam Veteran.

What did I do? I sucked it up. Worked full time as a waiter while going to college to make a better life for myself. I became an accountant and took responsibility for my life.

At some point you have to grow up and play the hand you are dealt and make the best of it.

12. See, it's this type of condescending response that is driving away our generation

"you are not very informed", "why should anyone care what you feel or think about politics", "HRC doesn't need your vote", "I doubt you've ever voted before"

If you care one iota about the Democratic Party you'd be trying to bring in the millennial generation, the largest voting bloc in the country who are overwhelmingly voting for Sanders. The way to *not* do that is respond to comments like you did above. You may think you're speaking the truth, but really all you're doing is being a condescending jerk and turning people away.

spelling errors and respond with "you fucking assholes" and you should expect condescension in response. Your post is juvenile.

And hmm joined DU just over a month ago.

I don't think you are what you say you are.

And I really hope you aren't a fellow Clinton supporter trying to make Bernie supporters look dumb, as a Clinton supporter myself, because that's how it sounds.

No, you don't all want to stop killing our planet.

You are speaking in very flawed absolutes. You are erroneously painting with the same broad brush you are accusing others of.

50. *Promise :P

I back Sanders because I support healthcare as a right, a sensible foreign policy, paid family leave, reformed public schools, and a host of other issues. What you call "cookies and milk" I call common sense. Hillary is what the Democrats have been offering for the last 30 years, and between them and the Republicans this country has forgotten about the middle class and the poor.

You invented a Hillary to hate because you need one.

The difference between Bernie and Hillary is that Hillary knows what it takes to get there and can get us there.

71. Unfortunately, she doesn't

She still wants people to be covered by private health insurance, which has proven to be vastly more expensive than national healthcare systems and still leaves some out in the cold. Her foreign policy history speaks for itself. She didn't support Sen. Gillibrand's paid family leave bill that was favored in the Senate. To her credit she does often speak of the need to improve public schools. One out of four isn't very good, and there are plenty of other issues that we could discuss.

I want to know what makes your generation better than mine (I'm in my 50s). Your air of assured superiority and implied accusation (the "me" generation? We didn't all have iPhones and certificates just for participating or half the junk kids now go through, for starters. Some of us spent our lives devoted to science (me) or medicine or ecological activism or progressive causes like women's and civil and LGBTQ rights. Do you think your generation won civil rights for starting from zero?

I hear this line from Sanders supporters. I don't get the superiority implied. If you grew up poor (as I did) it sucked then as now.

Anyway done here. You're arguing a foolish case for a candidate who has already lost and were he to win would not be able to do most of what you idealistically believe him capable of. He'd be Jimmy Carter redux. One term of failure and done.

74. Your expressed "context" is even more mockworthy than your illiteracy.

Both are symptoms of someone who isn't well read or informed, and only has the most cursory grasp of the extremely complex issues of the day at the most simplistic black/white, yes/no level. This is the intellectual equivalent of running with scissors. You want everything and you want it all now. You lot seem quite eager to burn the whole place down if the magic pony isn't handed to you, but short of demanding presents and wanting to be wooed, you have no idea how to achieve your goals.

childish. She is n adult, wanting adult conversation. Hears the childish and gives it to me anyway.

You say, you do not know if you could be in either party. That alone says something when one is going to have a conversation with you. That is quite a statement.

Listening, a two way listening is a good thing. I listen to you and your issues. You listen back. We progress forward.

With so little info, that is about all I can say. It is yours to process.

Don't ever give in to them, no matter what. Their candidate is far more likely to see the inside of a Federal courtroom than the Oval Office.

I think very highly of the younger generation and I am excited to see what they do in life. I have a lot fo hope and see a lot of opportunity.

Who are you to suggest I do not think highly of our youth, and to play the stupid ass Sanders game of pitting our young against our old. That is probably what pisses me off most about Sanders is the playing in negativity and on fear and anger with our youth instead of rising them up. And he had that opportunity, but he was unable to deliver. He failed our youth.

I know many more millennials than the average person my age (56). Plenty of them -- women especially -- are Clinton supporters.

Here read this:

"Millennials young Americans ages 18-29 overwhelmingly prefer Democrat Hillary Clinton over Republican Trump, according to a poll released Monday by Harvard University's Institute of Politics. Further, the margin by which young people would prefer a generic Democrat in the White House as opposed to an unnamed Republican nearly doubled in the past year, a dramatic swing the poll's director attributes largely to the presence of Trump in the race."

81. Lol. It has been a challenge. And I do listen a lot. That allows respect, if nothing else.

But they aren't my people. Over the decades I come to realize, that really really matters, lol. I am trying to get back. But, we do not always get what we want. Sometimes, for the bigger picture, we have to just accept, and make the best of it.

I want the outsider, that would shake the govt up, since early 1990's. To this day. I started with Sanders. The first day he came out and knowing my first time voting son, I gave Sanders to my son. His first comment, he is a socialist and people won't vote for him.

I told him to listen. That Sanders addresses exactly him. That Sanders was talking to him.

We had about 6 months of my son being a Sanders supporter. He also reads and is informed. Thinks too. So, as a mama, and respectful to him, I didn't say anything about the election, so his first time voting could be as grand as I wanted it for him.

I had done the research on Sanders, listened to Sanders and I developed strong issues with Sanders. My right too.

About 6 months in or more.... about Feb., my son told me that he had compared Sanders issues to Clintons issues, and he thought Clinton issues were much stronger and there were Sanders issues he really disagreed with.

He voted Clinton in the primary. Which was probably the conversation we had where he stated that he had changed his mind. I literally stayed out of his process.

I love politics. I love being a parent. I love having a 21 and 18 yr old. And the nieces and nephews. My kids are GREAT. Literally. They have been kind to me, and easy on me, and make pretty damn good choices. I graduated with my son, just a week ago. I know longer have to be that directing and guiding parent. They have earned the right to make their choices, and I am FREE.

My point. The people you are yelling at are parents, who have kids, that we love with all our heart, and have spent a lifetime listening to.

Do you... Listen.

I think life will become a hell of a lot less irritating, understanding where another is coming from. I hear your anger and frustration and would love hours talking with you. Cause a sentence doesn't do it. Hence, this long post.

Take care of you. 25, a damn fun age. I also read a study where 20's were the hardest, in angst. I dunno, boys and I discussed it because that is the decade they are walking into. We get why that would be said in ways. But man.... my 20's? Lots of growing. OH, and lots of fun, lol.

And you are correct that you have taken on unfair broad brush attacks. Really, many groups have, but few with the blanket attacks toward the youth.

You need to look past them. Sorry to tell you that but it should hold no weight in your political decisions. The youth vote is important and we should focus on it. Both of our candidates have platform positions that appeal to young voters. You are not being forgotten or dismissed.

That being said, some perspective is also good. Can you imaging being a POC on this site and having to read people promoting the land ownership argument? Far too many groups have been disparaged. Try putting yourself in the shoes of the person I just mentioned. It's the true promotion of oppression.

I'm fully on board with the thought that young people have taken a bit of a whacking.

72. Whoever taught you about politics should be sued for malpractice. Or you should demand a refund.

Democracy is a system of government in which everyone participates. If you successfully convince a majority of people to agree with you, you win. If you don't, you lose. That's it. And nowhere along the way has the Bernie Sanders "movement" made any effort to appeal to people who don't already agree with what they think. In fact, it's been more of your allies insulting and castigating their way through this primary than anyone else. Your fellow Berners have become mouthpieces for rightwing lies, all because they let their emotions get manipulated into HATING a political opponent, instead of being able to be grown-up enough to understand that people can disagree with you without being transformed into a caricature of Satan Incarnate.

Bernie supporters have repeatedly called African-Americans for Clinton "low-information voters" who "don't know what their best interests are." That African-American voters would undoubtedly be voting for Sanders "if they knew more about him," as though anyone who doesn't vote for Sanders must automatically be too stupid to understand what they're doing. The implication has clearly been that African-American Democrats need white progressives to tell them how to vote and for whom to vote. Do you genuinely believe this attitude was supposed to GROW the Bernie Sanders coalition? I sure hope not.

Bernie supporters have also repeatedly insulted the women who have voted for Clinton, of all races, by implying that they're "voting with their vaginas." Sanders surrogates like "Killer" Mike (Great idea, btw, getting a surrogate who calls himself "Killer" like it's nothing) embarrassed themselves by saying such offensive stuff like "having a uterus doesn't make you qualified," as if that were Clinton's sole argument for her candidacy. So many male campaign surrogates for Sanders have been caught making this argument, which is offensive to women who've been putting up with patronizing speech like that for their entire lives. Do you genuinely believe that insulting women voters, who make up a majority of Democrats, was supposed to GROW the Bernie Sanders coalition? Again, I sure hope not.

I'm really losing my patience with the kind of voters like you who think that participation entitled you to automatic victory. You can't acknowledge that you backed a candidate who ended up less popular in a system based on majority voting than you expected. Do you see Martin O'Malley supporters throwing shit-fits online about the injustice of their candidate not winning? No, you don't. So what's the difference between you and Martin O'Malley supporters, where they're mature enough to accept the results but you're not?

A national election in a nation of more than 300 million people is not, NEWSFLASH, about your feelings. If you need a hug, go upstairs and ask mom or dad for one. The Democratic Party is the most diverse party in this country, and yet your side thinks you should be put in charge exclusively because you demand it. That's not how democracy works, but it is how "privilege" works. And if you're tired of hearing that, find a new hobby. I heard there's a new Harry Potter story coming out; maybe you can get excited about that instead.

If any one wondered if the HRC crowd was really as mean and hateful as is sometime displayed on this site - wonder no more. They are reaching a fever pitch of hate. It is really quit ugly.
My son is a millennial (someone please correct my spelling if necessary) and is for Bernie. He would agree with everything you said, as do I.
The response you got from so many is part of the reason the effort to "unite", if that happens at all, will be very difficult indeed.
They are part and parcel of the Hillary campaign. Not a winning recipe for a leader and uniter of the party.
We will see how much the Democratic party has shrunk after this election as so many will reregister as independent.
So hate on haters, when you have nothing of value to contribute to the conversation, just spew your hate and move on.

President Obama won voters 18-29 by 23% and lost voters over 65 by 12% and voters 45-64 by 4%.

http://ropercenter.cornell.edu/polls/us-elections/how-groups-voted/how-groups-voted-2012/

Calling millennials a group of protesters who don't do their own research is a losing strategy. Not taking their concerns seriously and changing the platform to bring them in could give us President Trump.

the debt incurred by getting America involved in the Libya and Syria civil war as well as keeping us on a perpetual war footing, and pushing fracking in the US and around the world threatens our clean drinking water and climate.

President Obama has done a lot of good, and I'm glad he's admitted chained cpi and Libya were mistakes.

Obviously these mistakes affect more than just millennials, but millennials will bear the brunt of these wasteful and reckless military adventures and lack of serious action on climate change.

this is a generation of people who tend to see through games and illusion and cannot be played, and this pisses a lot of people off. But I admire people who are true to themselves and are stubborn to resist bad programming--which is what we need to change the world

consider matters of values, record, merits, or policy, because they can't. There's nothing defensible about greed, bloodthirstiness, or power for its own sake. So there has to be some other issue you can be dismissed on: their spell-check is better than yours, for example. Ad hominem attack is a tactic people resort to when they have no other leg to stand on. Treat it like you would any other natural disaster: remove yourself to a safe distance, and if you can't help, you're free to leave.
Don't be discouraged by the deficiencies of others: their bad words and behavior aren't a reflection on you.

123. jpmonk91 is good, merrily

He/she had the class to send me a PM of thanks for being supportive (b/c they couldn't answer directly due to a hide). Seems all the abuse on this thread came from one side. As usual..

106. Millennials don't use the word "retarded"

At least the progressive/liberal ones don't. So I have a hard time believing you. Sorry.

111. I agree with the overall message of op but...

Thanks to his/her comments it's just making the stereotypes worse. Just be independent and abandon the traditional vote like other millennials haves. Also you need a exo-suit because you have thin skin.

120. I thought my generation was the best. But you guys give an old boomer hope.

I don't know what went right, but something did. Maybe it's your parents? Maybe it's the ability to talk to anyone anywhere electronically? Maybe evolution decided the old pattern wasn't working and it was time to try a new one?

But clearly, something went right. Keep it, whatever it is. Keep that flame alive.

Love you guys.

And I don't mean "rant."

127. Young man

You are 25 and on a political website, so I am willing to guess that you are probably in some kind of post-secondary program. I truly hope you get your money's worth and learn to capitalize 'democrat' and 'republican'.

130. Actually, no, they're not capitalized in the context he's using them.

Neither republican nor democrat are proper nouns. They're common nouns, used to generically describe individuals affiliated with either party.

The parties themselves would be capitalized, because they are proper nouns - the Republican Party, the Democratic part (the is usually not capitalized in titles, except when it is.)

The plural version gets a little tricky, and depends on how you're using it. If you're just pluralizing the common noun, it remains lowercase - "some republicans believe..." for instance. But if you're using it as a summation for the party as a whole, it is capitalized - "the Democrats issued a statement today..."

I suggest you learn how capitalization works in English before trying to chastise someone else over it.

While we're on it, never use single quotation marks like that. Single quotation marks are only valid for when a a quote is being used inside another quote.

128. I do not have the time nor inclination to read all previous posts

But after reading this post, you are a 25 year old child. Always been a Democrat? For 1 election?

To me you are the prime example of what we get when kids get trophies for 5th place and told they are a winner. This is the first time your candidate has lost. Deal with it. By the time you are my age you will be lucky if your candidate has won half the time.

You will learn to reserve this kind of emotion for the birth of a child, the loss of a parent or grandparent or having a cancer diagnosis.

In other words, you will grow up.

137. Hello

Ageist is normally reserved for times when we old people have our age held againstus. When we start having employers and society discriminate against young people, I will be concerned.

Growing old sucks in lots of ways, but most of get one, and only one advantage out of it. Perspective.

138. You called a 25 year-old a "child." That's smug and demonstrates your bigotry toward young adults.

Ageism laws tend to protect those over 40. It's usually perfectly legal to fire someone for being young and to have last in first out employment policies regardless of merit.

Your age appears to have brought you smugness, not perspective.

It's an offensive term. The millennials I know wouldn't use the word.
