(68,456 posts)Bernie should have conceded long ago. All this ranting about taking it to the convention...forced the supers to send him a message. Now, we need to get on with beating Trump...so I hope you will lend a hand in that important endeavor. If not, then get out of the way.

(146,254 posts)Really? The election will be held. I doubt that many will stay home over this. I wouldn't.

(62,444 posts)There is no actual point in voting in California.

(62,444 posts)Those happen at midterms too. As I mentioned, nobody turns out for midterms.

(146,254 posts)You know that, and so do CA voters.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Nobody turns out for down-ticket races. That's why midterm turnout sucks.

(62,444 posts)For the same reason that practically nobody comes out for midterms, there is no reason to vote in California.

(62,444 posts)It is magical thinking to believe people turn out for down-ticket races. They don't, as illustrated by decades of midterms.

(6,568 posts)The President has very little power in comparison with Congress. Congress is where it really counts. I vote in all primaries and midterms, and encourage all of my friends to as well.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)No amount of education for decades has managed to do anything to reduced turnout in the absence of a presidential contest. None.
Whether you vote in primaries and midterms has nothing to do with the vast majority of voters.

(1,089 posts)can only mean that you are completely ignorant of all of the candidates and issues on the ballot tomorrow.
I can understand talking shit to supporters of the candidate that loses - at least sort of - even though I keep telling folks that do that to grow up, as this isn't a football game where you root for a team. It's sophomoric and reveals character, but at least I can understand the visceral reactions of fanboys and fangirls for both HRC and SBS. It's been a long and tough fight and now it's over. Emotions tend to get the best of some people who lack self control and maturity.
But talking shit to an entire state? Really?
In other words, you made a complete ass of yourself in very few words.
Well done.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)I think you're misreading anger as gloating..
That makes a lot more sense and my apologies to the OP, which I will post separately.
Although it's still astounding to see others stupidly saying the vote here is meaningless. Do some fucking reading, for the love of Pete. Senate races, statewide propositions and a whole shitload of local measures are on ballots. Like our county board, for one, which is surprisingly heated around here this time.
This is an important vote here.

(10,122 posts)Bernie staying in because of that speaks volumes.
BTW the first presidential vote I ever cast was for Clinton in 96 in San Diego. I voted early in Texas this year for Bernie.
SDJay
(1,089 posts)for Clinton in Wisconsin. I've been in San Diego since 1999.
Anyway, you're right. It's as if what used to happen behind the curtain is not really hidden anymore. It's a show more than anything and that makes me sad. The MSM wants their summer ratings. They were going to get them no matter what.

(97 posts)to announce before the primaries tomorrow? It's the press making news.
onenote
(42,585 posts)And how does it change Sanders strategy and the significance of California to that strategy? You, me, Sanders and everyone paying a moment's attention knew that if the press hadn't pronounced Clinton to be the presumptive nominee let night they would have done so as soon as NJ finished voting. Sanders strategy was to push for a big wins that cut into Clinton's pledged delegate margin and that would give him arguments to make to the SDs he said he was going to try to flip. How is the strategy any different this morning than yesterday morning? And why is that its Sanders supporters that are now treating California as meaningless when it means exactly the same today as it did yesterday?
jwirr
(39,215 posts)and that would help Hillary win.
This is really unAmerican - especially of the press.
onenote
(42,585 posts)His strategy has been to try to cut as deeply into Clinton's pledged delegate margin and win CA so he can use those talking points, along with GE polls, to argue to SDs that they should switch to him. He has essentially conceded, as has everyone paying attention, that Clinton would have a combination of pledged delegates and SD commitments in excess of 2383 as soon as New Jersey is declared around 8:30 tonight. He wasn't happy about the fact that the media at that point would pronounce Clinton the presumptive nominee but he knew it was going to happen.
So the motivation for Sanders voters to show up at the polls today is the same as it was before last night's announcement.
It seems strange that its the Sanders supporters that are arguing California now is meaningless when it means exactly the same thing now as it did before last night -- a key element of Sanders SD switching strategy.

If you live in California: GO VOTE!

(110,159 posts)need them. Why blame her. That is success and a pat on her back for being so accomplished. Regardless of the AP or not, we all knew before California would close, so again, who are you blaming?

(68,456 posts)There is way more at stake than Bernie Sanders. California has unique rules for down ballot races...everyone is thrown together by the office they are running for and you vote for two of them to go into the general there are 32 people on the Senate primary ballot...it could be two Democrats , a traitorous green or two of them...two GOP types...and those selected go into the primary. It does not matter what party they come from. So it is still important to vote in California...and the state was never important for the Democratic presidential primary...Hillary would have been the Nominee before the California polls closed after Jersey.

(39,961 posts)Is it like the GE where you vote for anybody you choose to vote for, or something different?
Demsrule86
(68,456 posts)a mixture of Dems,Repubs, and indies...and if two GOP are selected then, they run in the general against each other-no Dem! ...so the primary is very important.

(13,340 posts)You do realize that whoever goes last kinda doesn't matter so much, right? That's the way it has been my whole voting life. Heck, a lot of times, if your primary is in MAY, your vote doesn't really matter. If the AP hadn't made its call, Clinton would STILL have won a majority of pledged delegates today, and the votes of DC voters wouldn't really matter. That's just an artifact of our crummy primary system.
tritsofme
(17,370 posts)if they want a better shot at being relevant. This was a choice made the local Dem party, no one stood in the way of California holding their primary in March or April
Algernon Moncrieff
(5,781 posts)It's a system that allows Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina to exert an inordinate amount of influence, and often renders the votes of states voting after Super Tuesday meaningless.
We need to reform the system and hold all of the state primaries on the same day (using multiple choice voting) or the same days (using a multi tier system). No more delegates. No more super delegates. We just vote, and whoever gets 50% + 1 or more votes wins.
I would advocate that the party sends ballots to members 2 weeks prior to an election date; members vote at home and mail back the ballots; and the ballots are counted under the supervision of an independent accounting firm.

(8,755 posts)I am not sure in my mind of the impacts for Clinton vs Sanders but decrease voter turnout is likely and those that voted early and by mail will have a larger say in the other polls on the ballot.
