Now, before you freak out with that comparison, hear me out. I'm not saying it in a negative way.
As we all know, Goldwater was something very different in the republican party's national profile in 1964. He energized the conservatives in 64 but ultimately didn't win the election. However, his influence on the republican party has been widespread and deep in the republican party ever since. I wonder if Sanders will end up having the same type of effect on the democratic party. He energized a lot of people, gave the democratic party a new type of platform, but ultimately fell short. But I do wonder if going forward, we will have a massive influence on the future of the democratic party, even decades from now if Sander's fingerprints will be all over democratic policy and philosophy.

(5,443 posts)and the conservatives that slowly took over the GOP for the prior 16 years. Bernie could help start a progressive movement to move the Democratic Party leftwards.

(3,072 posts)Its been over 50 years. The republicans of the 1950's were nothing like the republicans from 1964 onward.
