Why Hillary Clinton really might tap Elizabeth Warren for VP

A steady drumbeat of inevitability?

The Week, Paul Waldman

*****

For a long time, those in the know would tell you that as much as liberal Democrats would love to have Warren on the ticket in November, it just wasn't in the cards (I made the argument myself). The cautious Clinton wouldn't risk an all-female ticket, the two don't have much of a personal relationship, and Warren doesn't have foreign policy or national security experience, among other reasons. But the clamor for Warren is rising, and it's still possible Clinton just might pick her.

The truth is that in some liberal circles, Warren never ceased to be anything but the first choice for vice president — once it was clear she wasn't running for the top job herself. There are a substantial number of Democrats who absolutely worship Warren, not just for her policy positions (there are plenty of other Democrats who share them) or even for her effectiveness in actually getting some things done on finance issues (she's responsible for the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau), but mostly because of her effectiveness as an advocate for liberal causes. Warren has a folksy charisma that few politicians can match; on TV she comes across as friendly, smart, and cheerful all at the same time. She has an ability to present complex ideas in understandable ways, connect policy questions to people's actual lives, and infuse dry issues with emotion and passion.

Which may be why Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is apparently pushing for Clinton to name Warren to the ticket. And depending on how you look at it, Warren is either a skillful manager of the media, or a press darling; either way, she gets plenty of attention when she wants it, and it's usually positive.

*****

Even if it's not critical that Clinton take concrete steps to win over Bernie Sanders' supporters (despite what some of the more vocal ones are saying now, the overwhelming majority will be with her), there's little doubt that naming Warren as her running mate would make most Democrats beside themselves with glee. She's one of the most effective advocates for progressive ideas in politics today, and she would make a historic campaign even more so, even if we have no idea whether an all-female ticket would lose additional votes because of sexism over and above what would be lost by having Clinton as the nominee.

There is a possibility that Warren might outshine Clinton. That could be good or bad, depending on how the campaign handles it.

Obama asked Hillary to take care of revitalizing our relationship with the world, while he focused on the domestic issues. It got him a Nobel Peace Prize!

Hillary could have Elizabeth focus on domestic economic issues and progressive values related to Wall Street and income inequality, drumming up grass roots support, backing the progress as it becomes possible.

These are two powerful Democratic voices who can inspire a generation!

It really would be something special!

She's already shown that she has no problem with others, in this case her boss and former bitter rival, getting more attention than she does.

Thanks for playing.

Why? Because she believes she is smarter than he. And two, he is a man. A black man, to be specific. So she really thinks she's smarter than he. I'll tell you a not so secret secret- Hillary is a bigot and a racist. She hides it better than Donald Trump, but I believe her words and actions through the decades, prove it.

Elizabeth is a woman who is every bit as intelligent, if not smarter. What's more- Elizabeth's emotional intelligence far surpasses Hillary's. I also think Elizabeth Warren would confront her when Hillary is wrong and there would be constant conflict between the two women. Elizabeth Warren is not the type to keep quiet about it.

selection, but that's OK. Truthfully, I think a couple of energetic/smart women can do a lot for this country. And, there is no reason the VP has to be some quiet position, totally in the shadow of the Prez. I wouldn't bet on it happening, but this has been a strange campaign.

Shook his hand on Election Day in '72.

What I don't like is Democratic Party selling out. My Democratic soul gets wounded and my faith dies a bit more when things like votes for FISA (Sen. Tim Johnson and Sen. Obama), TPP gets pushed, Social Security gets placed on negotiation table (Obama), and Wall St. Watchdog gets neutered by VP pick.

that Warren is being bandied about as VP to take her away from keeping an eye on "Wall Street?"

Her integrity is such that she would turn down the job if it took her away!

The sick narrative that Hillary is a tool of Wall Street and would select Warren or Sanders to shutter them in the insignificance of the vice-presidency is straight out of a Hollywood fiction!

Come on - 'Creative Speculation Group' should be a catch-all for this BS narrative.

And what the hell is wrong with TPP?

At this point, no matter who is in office, no one is in jail for war crimes, for bank fraud, etc. We are watching out public schools defunded, we have a former board member of Walmart that is supposedly pro Union ... I just can't swallow it all and I am sorry that so many supposed die hard Democrats don't demand or expect better. Instead, they vilify or mock those who do speak up instead of being a doormat and blindly accepting.

I'd far rather be a thorn in the side and call out wrongs now than howl later with misplaced blame.

I have kids that I don't want to see get recruited for the next war our hawkish candidate chooses to get us involved in. I don't want to see what little I have socked into retirement gobbled away to benefit greed and fraud. I don't want our water and environment contaminated by fracking and oil tar pipelines. I have zilch trust in HRC to do any right thing unless a corporate backer benefits. She has done enough damage with her own words and actions to earn that distrust.
