2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNonsupporters of the Democratic Nominee should NOT get Speaking Time at the Convention
Nonsupporters of the Democratic Nominee Should Get NO Speaking Time at the Convention. None. Not one second of time. Maybe they should skip it.
Stump speeches were meant to be given during the primary fight. It makes no sense to allow the opponents of the Nominee, the ones who are still campaigning, to be given time at the convention to continue the primary fight.
Now, once they concede and give up the idea of causing a big ruckus, then they should be given a Prime Time Spot to discuss the issues they support. As long as they do it in a way that is supportive of the Democratic Candidate for President of the United States.
I would not appreciate having disruptors at the convention trying to soil the nominee or tear the party down by using prime time speaking spots to lash out at us and our process.
So, in short, it is my OPINION that anybody who refuses to concede or refuses to support the candidacy of Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump, should not get any airtime and possibly should not even be allowed to attend. It is her party, no disruptors should get admittance.

Feminism[edit]
The Feminist Movement was a major influence on the Democratic platform of 1972, and on the entire convention in general. With renewed vigor, the Democrats reaffirmed their dedication to the Equal Rights Amendment, as did the Republicans.
There were disagreements within the Democrats of the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC), and the Women's Movement in general, over how to best approach certain issues. At the convention Betty Friedan clashed with Gloria Steinem over the way NWPC women should approach certain issues, and whether or not they should make sure to throw all possible support behind Shirley Chisholm (both women were supporters of Chisholm's presidential campaign).
~Snip~
McGovern ultimately excised the abortion issue from the party's platform; recent publications show McGovern was deeply conflicted on the issue.[6] Actress and activist Shirley MacLaine, though privately supporting abortion rights, urged the delegates to vote against the plank. Gloria Steinem later wrote this description of the events:
The consensus of the meeting of women delegates held by the caucus had been to fight for the minority plank on reproductive freedom; indeed our vote had supported the plank nine to one. So fight we did, with three women delegates speaking eloquently in its favor as a constitutional right. One male Right-to-Life zealot spoke against, and Shirley MacLaine also was an opposition speaker, on the grounds that this was a fundamental right but didn't belong in the platform. We made a good showing. Clearly we would have won if McGovern's forces had left their delegates uninstructed and thus able to vote their consciences.[7]

(15,236 posts)Actually it was a police riot Mayor Daley represented everything an entire generation thought they opposed until they became the machine themselves. Ending up with Nixon, politicians and Civil Rights leaders getting killed, George Wallace, Vietnam. I do not think to this day that generation including the Clinton's have recovered. In the end Nixon became apolitical or so he claimed, he was still a crook. He would qualify as an almost Progressive Democrat today.
The ghost of Richard Daley still haunts the Democratic Party. 1968 and now 2016 may be a wild ride.

(15,236 posts)In my day disrupters got their heads busted by goons in uniforms. Innocent by standers were shot by week end warriors. People today do not have the guts to protest even when their kids are getting killed in contrived wars or their retirement is being robbed.
The Daley machine would have approved. His life would have been much easier today with passivity. I also remember who got deferments and how they were bought. Even going to Canada was not an option if you were poor or did not have the Privilege.
Good luck happy times are here again.

(15,236 posts)Paid for by labor from Communist countries which became debt. It was just fine bankrupting the American economy in order to fund wars.
What I see are people deluded enough to actually think they have not been manipulated. The same attitudes that busted heads and gassed people in Ferguson is ready for a police riot at the Democratic Convention. Richard Daley lives and your lives do not matter.
The solution to subsequent Democratic Conventions from 1968 was to be more inclusive and not bust heads. For example Jessie Jackson did not get his head busted even though he lost. Ted Kennedy got to speak at the convention after challenging a sitting President.
The problem here are people willing to ignore history. To me all of this sounds like Richard Daley and his police riot. Keep stifling dissent Daley would approve. Democratic Party Conventions have always been chaotic. It was the Republican Conventions that usually kept to a unified party line. Anyone who thinks Political Party Conventions in any era of history are fair driven by primary votes suffer from immature delusion. Call the roll call of delegates that is the real vote at the convention. Keep doing that until you get a winner. Let any protestors get it out of their system. Remember they will be back and the government does NOT regulate your political party.
The rotting ghost of Richard Daley is getting a huge laugh at the return of Democratic machine politics.

(12,689 posts)The convention is supposed to be show of unity, not division. If this was a race with several people and no one had a majority of pledged delegates, then it would be a different story, but that is not the case here.

(23,620 posts)Lots of speakers, maybe even a Bernie supporter or two, but the candidates themselve doesn't get to speak, no last stump speech. Then once the party's nominee is chosen, no one else gets the stage. It's the party's nominee time to shine. So if Bernie doesn't concede before the convention, then no Bernie speech.

(18,890 posts)Negative people have nothing of value to say. They bring down everyone around them - hoping to have them sink to their level. They suck the life out of those around them and create strife and ugliness. They feed on it. It is a sad and hopeless place that they call home.
I hope there are no negative speakers at the convention. I want to see positivity , hope, and the possibility of changing the destructive path this country is on.

(7,133 posts)Since joining the Democratic Party one year ago, he has devoted Side B of his broken record (Side A being Billionaires, Millionaires, Oligarchy) to attacking the party and its rules when those same rules began to disadvantage him. Since stating at the White House a couple of weeks ago that he was going to do everything in his power to defeat Trump, he has, contrary to those words, publicly nursed grudges against our presumptive nominee, insinuated that he wants to disrupt the convention in some way, and kept his supporters still in thrall to his Fairy-Land thinking about a path to victory by not conceding.
Sanders cannot be trusted.
Fla Dem
(23,620 posts)Candidates still in the running for the nomination are not given an opportunity to speak at the convention prior to the delegate vote. Then once the vote is taken and the party's nominee is determined, losing candidates are not given any time to make a concession speech, there's no point, they've lost. At that point it's all about the party's nominee. So Bernie will have to concede before the convention if he wants a speaking spot.

But
at the end of the day, this will be a convention just like every other convention and we will show America the breadth of the definition of Democrat. There will be only one "party" . . . the Democratic Party.
