Zephyr Teachout Receives New York Times Endorsement

Source: The Progressive Brief

Zephyr Teachout received a big endorsement on Thursday in the form of an editorial that ran in The New York Times. The NYT Editorial Board called Teachout “the better choice” between her and her primary opponent, Will Yandik, for the Democratic representative vying for New York’s 19th Congressional District. The district currently has an open seat, as incumbent Republican Chris Gibson has announced he will not run for reelection.

While Yandik was praised in the article for a “strong record of working with local Republicans to protect water quality” and his “good ideas to bolster the local economy,” Teachout received the endorsement due to her “potential to be a rarity in Congress — an effective local representative who has national stature as a legal expert on political reform.”

Teachout first made her name as a highly respected law professor at Fordham University. She raised her political profile after challenging New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary in 2014. Her campaign was relatively successful, managing to pull in a third of the vote against the incumbent. Her book, “Corruption in America,” further solidified her stance as a staunch critic of the current state of political corruption, with The Wall Street Journal calling the book a “masterly work of scholarship.”

In the article, the NYT went to say that Teachout’s “political skills and expertise would make her a powerful ally for those who have become angry and disillusioned by Washington’s chronic dysfunction.” These traits have not gone unnoticed until now, as Teachout has also received an endorsement from fellow New York Democrat, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

Teachout’s biggest endorsement up to this point, however, may be the ringing endorsement from Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in April.
