2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe time has come to support Sec. Clinton, my fellow Sanders supporters.
I just saw Bernie's interview on CNN, and Bernie erased any doubts that he will VIGOROUSLY support Hillary in her campaign for POTUS. As a fifth-generation, lifelong, yellow-dog Democrat and old-time 'leftie', I have had more enthusiasm for other nominees, but Bernie rationally made the case for supporting Hillary in all ways possible. I will very likely never be rid of my reservations about Hillary, but I am also unwilling to break the Seventh Seal and usher in the Apocalypse that a Trump presidency would be. *deep breath* GO HILLARY!

(11,605 posts)For what it's worth, I am happy for people like you who got their hearts broken 8 years ago and now get to see Hillary become the nominee. I have a good friend who was in that situation and I am happy for her. Being on the other side sucks but it's not so terrible for me because I don't hate Hillary like some Bernie supporters do and I always knew Bernie was a longshot so I tried (not entirely successfully) to avoid getting too emotionally invested.

(26,241 posts)I do not feel the enthusiasm that I felt during past Presidential election seasons, but I am most definitely open to that changing.
This election is just way too important for anyone to go into a 'snit' and sit in the corner, or throw their vote to a 3rd party candidate because their candidate wasn't selected.
Given the state of the current Republican party, it is imperative we keep them away from the White House and FAR away from SCOTUS nominations.

(146 posts)I think the bottomest line if there is any such word for the TOS As I have read or fly by it quickly as I have no patience for detail at all is that we now have a nominee and we now have to support her in this forum, am I right or am I wrong? You seem to be beating around the trolley in saying whom you'll vote and support per you "conscious" which is possible that it couldn't be our nominee?

(1,820 posts)In fact I am greatly disappointed. I also worry that he had to evolve on LBGT rights. On the other hand he has done many things to be proud of!

(34,845 posts)"Vote for who you want" shouldn't be a one-way street. Voting for the best candidate available, however, should, imo, be part of your decision.
Right now, the best candidate available is Clinton. I don't like her that much myself but I'm damned sure keeping the rest of the country in mind when I vote.
Silver_Witch
(1,820 posts)That is what America is all about!!! There is no one-way street in my post....I simply state that other opinions don't influence me...that is the truth. I evaluate, watch, listen and then I decide based on facts and what I think is best for me and the country.
We get to vote our hearts and our conscious.

this is very long read, but we'll worth time, esp f/ those who've taken RW hate-Hillary memes too seriously
The most thorough, profound and moving defense of Hillary Clinton I have ever seen.
First of all this is not my writing. It's a Facebook post by someone I dont even know, a man named Michael Arnovitz in Portland OR. But as a Facebook post it passes the fair use test and Im quite certain he would not object that I share it here (he doesnt). The original Facebook post is here: https://www.facebook.com/michael.arnovitz.3?fref=nf&pnref=story So without further ado, its truly worth the read:
"In the course of a single conversation, I have been assured that Hillary is cunning and manipulative but also crass, clueless, and stunningly impolitic; that she is a hopelessly woolly-headed do-gooder and, at heart, a hardball litigator; that she is a base opportunist and a zealot convinced that God is on her side. What emerges is a cultural inventory of villainy rather than a plausible depiction of an actual person." Henry Louis Gates The quote above comes from a fascinating article called Hating Hillary, written by Gates for the New Yorker in 1996. Even now, 20 years after it was first published, its a fascinating and impressive piece, and if you have a few spare moments I strongly recommend it to you. (http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newyorker.com%2Fmagazine%2F1996%2F02%2F26%2Fhating-hillary&h=IAQG_OK8h&enc=AZMTuoKHiXlNSYnE1Fw3YvlKFXktHrMTGl-UsORwH8r2c8llVf1VNKCdVBHB2Fn9RfAlG7-089u3gkcRT4JzuEjbBOG3JhzPVDO_utWghdOCincMTiTVaJKy2L5sNz7AE4suw3jwLPHrtW72IJQTkSiy&s=1 )
And Im reading pieces like this because now that Hillary has (essentially if not officially) won the Democratic Primary, I have become increasingly fascinated by the way so many people react to her. In truth, I sometimes think that I find that as interesting as Hillary herself. And I cant help but notice that many of the reactions she receives seem to reflect what Gates referred to as a cultural inventory of villainy rather than any realistic assessment of who she really is and what she has really done.
To conservatives she is a radical left-wing insurgent who has on multiple occasions been compared to Mikhail Suslov, the Soviet Kremlins long-time Chief of Ideology. To many progressives (you know who you are), she is a Republican fox in Democratic sheeps clothing, a shill for Wall Street who doesnt give a damn about the working class. The fact that these views could not possibly apply to the same person does not seem to give either side pause. Hillary haters on the right and the left seem perfectly happy to maintain their mutually incompatible delusions about why she is awful. The only thing both teams seem to share is the insistence that Hillary is a Machiavellian conspirator and implacable liar, unworthy of societys trust.
Much more:

(51,504 posts)By agreeing to the TOS, you agreed to support Democrats.
The question of who you will support in November is really just another way of asking if you are complying with the TOS. If you don't want people asking you your political positions, perhaps you shouldn't post on a political discussion board, especially one where you are required to support Dems.

(51,504 posts)This is an anonymous progressive Democratic message board. If you have issues with it, I suggest you try discussing it in ATA, not with me.

(45,251 posts)Your post was about the TOS. I have no problem with this being a message board. I had an issue with the implication of your post. Hence I replied to your post instead of posting in ATA.
Like it or not, the TOS does not require anyone to ask for whom a DUer is entitled to vote nor does it require any DUer to state for whom he or she will vote. Therefore, when a DUer does ask, replying that one's vote is private, which is true for very good reasons, does not violate the TOS.
SunSeeker
(51,504 posts)I am not "required" to ask you nor are you "required" to respond. But nothing I am asking is a violation of privacy. The fact that you went on and on with your defensive argument rather than simply answer the question pretty much answers HarmonyRocket's question anyway.
merrily
(45,251 posts)you did not ask me or anyone else about voting, at least not in this subthread. Therefore, I did not accuse you, even a little, of invading anyone's privacy. Finally (3) My reply 64 to you, which was all of a single, simple sentence pointing out that your implication about the TOS was incorrect, was not the least bit defensive. (My next reply was about your misunderstanding my Reply 64.)
I'm glad you finally agree with me that the TOS does not require any DUer to state how he or she will vote. However, votes are private, just ask Allison Grimes or any other Secretary of State of any state of the U.S.A. That's why there's a curtain on voting machines, and why it must be closed before the occupant can vote. (Boston uses paper ballots, but dividers prevent voters from peeking at each other's ballots.) Loyalty oaths and the like have been considered odious in this country since McCarthy, if not sooner; and you no doubt know the expression about ASSUME-ing. I think we've about beaten the subject to death at this point, anyway.

(51,504 posts)I am just stating a fact. If you disagree with the TOS, take it up with ATA, not me.

(805 posts)a pop-up appears that asks the simple question "Do you plan to vote for Hillary in the upcoming presidential election?" with two options:
- Yes
- No/Undecided.
If you click 'yes' then you proceed to the board as normal. If you click 'No/Undecided' then your posting privileges are revoked until you re-visit the question in your profile and commit to the Democratic nominee.
Sure, people will lie and vote 'yes' just to get on, but any of the "She has to earn my vote...", "I'll vote my conscious...", or "It's none of your business" tools will be exposed as lying jackasses whose only purpose is to troll the board and create dissent.
John Poet
(2,510 posts)Sounds pretty authoritarian. What a way to 'win their hearts and minds'.

(37,748 posts)I pretend adherence to the TOS is authoritarian as well (must get that trendy t-shirt). And like you, I also pretend hearts and minds are relevant to the discussion and at stake due to a mere post on a message board.
Our melodrama lacks only the ominous soundtrack (Hans Zimmer, maybe?) to allow it further credibility.

(37,428 posts)Your enthusiasm is much appreciated, but Philly is time enough for me as well as for Senator Sanders.
What it's devinitely not time for is giving up on the greater things we can and should achieve. Let's all stay involved, and not let our nominee off the hook. We need her to do so much.
