2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTrump has locked down the Low-IQ vote.
Studies have shown that the base of today's Republican Party is, well, dumb.
They are largely under-educated. They watch stupid idiotic shit all the time like Fox News and listen to people like the drug addict and college dropout Rush Limbaugh. They are largely racist, and racism is based is dumb thought. They lack knowledge and critical thinking skills. They have weak vocabularies. Many are quite illiterate.
Tell it how it is. Huge percentages of Trump supporters are simply DUMB.
And Trump himself must be pretty dumb too, saying silly shit like, "Gee, how can I be down in the polls? I get such big crowds."
Just plain DUMB.
(Here's a "Republicans are DUMB" link for you: http://reverbpress.com/politics/proof-republicans-are-stupid/. I'm sure you can find more.)

(58,785 posts)people on the street about Hillary's emails is a much better indicator than IQ. The problem is character. So many conservatives have different moral codes and standards of proper behavior depending on whether they're dealing with their "own" or "ousiders."

(10,495 posts)2 aunts and 2 uncles all made their own fortunes and each has amassed a lot. They all are in their lates 60's or early 70's and are in fear of going broke. They all are hooked into the fear of the RW/corporate propaganda. My mom doesn't take their bait anymore. Professional de-programmers would have their work cut out with this group.
Our media has Right and Left programming that is full of propaganda and not reporting the truth. That is the main reason the huge multinational corporations own networks. There is a lot more benefit to owning and controlling them than ad dollars alone. We must strive to stay abreast of the issues of the day and not rely on corporate media.

(13,570 posts)It's a political forum requiring thicker skin. Sure, there are some people who are greedy Wall Street assholes who went to Harvard who will vote for Trumpenstein. And you'll note I say things like "largely", avoiding absolutes.
So, yes, the Trump voters are largely DUMB.

(13,570 posts)They are largely DUMB and are not interested in critical thinking or good information. We see it time, and time, and time again. They deny climate change. They think dinosaurs lived 6000 years ago. It goes on and on. The racism in today's Republican Party is RAMPANT. Only DUMBNESS allows for that.

Two segments of approximately 30 seconds of his Ranting about Hillary the Crook and Bill the flander and having a Illegal Meeting With Lynch the Attorney General, and somebody needs to be held accountable. Thought I had Fake Noise on. No wonder this turd does not need to raise campaign funds, the fix is in. So much for the thinking peoples station.

(81 posts)...with the kind of talk going on in this thread. I'm as frustrated with, and mystified by, the Trump supporters (and I know a few, some I really care about) as anyone, but I'm not happy just labelling every on of them as "stupid" or "dumb". I prefer "mislead"/"misinformed" .
And, this is where cable TV comes in. At 54, I have NEVER subscribed to it and I rarely see it. I don't watch TV much at all, just stream things of interest to me. I prefer my information in "pull mode" rather than "push mode". I was stuck sitting in a hospital for several days this week, while my husband had a joint replaced. Non-stop cable news blaring in the family waiting area and the patient rooms. OMG! I had NO idea how bad it was.
So, yeah, I agree with you, reddread, sort of, I'm not so sure that "stupid subscribes to cable" as I am that relying on Cable TV news for information causes one to be seriously mis/underinformed.

Hodson and Busseri (2012) found in a correlational study that lower intelligence in childhood is predictive of greater racism in adulthood, with this effect being mediated (partially explained) through conservative ideology. They also found poor abstract reasoning skills were related to homophobic attitudes which was mediated through authoritarianism and low levels of intergroup contact.
What this study and those before it suggest is not necessarily that all liberals are geniuses and all conservatives are ignorant. Rather, it makes conclusions based off of averages of groups. The idea is that for those who lack a cognitive ability to grasp complexities of our world, strict-right wing ideologies may be more appealing. Dr. Brian Nosek explained it for the Huffington Post as follows, ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simple solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies.

On average, people correctly answered 1.6 of 5 questions about domestic affairs.
Because the aim of the study was to isolate the effects of each type of news source, they then controlled for variables such as other news sources, partisanship, education and other demographic factors.
They found that someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer 1.04 domestic questions correctly compared to 1.22 for those who watched no news at all. Those watching only "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" answered 1.42 questions correctly and people who only listened to NPR or only watched Sunday morning political talk shows answered 1.51 questions correctly.

The authors test the hypothesis that low-effort thought promotes political conservatism. In Study 1, alcohol intoxication was measured among bar patrons; as blood alcohol level increased, so did political conservatism (controlling for sex, education, and political identification). In Study 2, participants under cognitive load reported more conservative attitudes than their no-load counterparts. In Study 3, time pressure increased participants endorsement of conservative terms. In Study 4, participants considering political terms in a cursory manner endorsed conservative terms more than those asked to cogitate; an indicator of effortful thought (recognition memory) partially mediated the relationship between processing effort and conservatism. Together these data suggest that political conservatism may be a process consequence of low-effort thought; when effortful, deliberate thought is disengaged, endorsement of conservative ideology increases.

This study examined the hypothesis that participants scoring lowest on a measure of abstract reasoning skills would have the highest levels of anti-gay prejudice. It was further hypothesized that abstract reasoning scores would account for variance in prejudice beyond that accounted for by previously established correlates of attitudes toward gay men: sex of the respondent (men being more prejudiced than women), contact with gay people (less contact being associated with higher prejudice), and right-wing authoritarianism (RWA; positively correlating with prejudice). It was also expected that abstract reasoning skills would be negatively correlated with RWA. The results supported each hypothesis. The predictor most strongly related to anti-gay prejudice was RWA, followed by contact with gay people, abstract reasoning skills, and sex of the respondent.

Peering inside the brain with MRI scans, researchers at University College London found that self-described conservative students had a larger amygdala than liberals. The amygdala is an almond-shaped structure deep in the brain that is active during states of fear and anxiety. Liberals had more gray matter at least in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region of the brain that helps people cope with complexity.
The results are not that surprising as they fit in with conclusions from other studies. Just a year ago, researchers from Harvard and UCLA San Diego reported finding a "liberal" gene. This gene had a tiny effect, however, and worked only for adolescents having many friends. The results also mesh with psychological studies on conflict monitoring.

I recall a discussion once over who were better Artists; Liberals or Conservatives. I have to see if I can find it because there were a few enlightening responses.
