Someone please explain the benefits of the TPP.. Especially since we have such low export numbers...I dont see in the immediate future any hope for improving on this situation..
IMO... Hillary needs to dump this idea very quickly and emphatically.. Unions and labor are attracted to Trumps anti-TPP Stance..... Fucking very dangerous..

(8,515 posts)We dont export much anymore..and Id rather make sure Trump has no ammunition against Hillary..

(3,075 posts)But i believe the strategy is that we don't export very much because our exports are taxed so much... i think the article said the wine we export to Japan is taxed over 80%, which makes it incredibly expensive, so it doesn't sell well. (can you imagine and 80% tax on California wine?)....
so by cutting the taxes, more people would buy the cheaper goods and we would then increase our exports, selling more and creating more jobs.

(2,193 posts)Global trade is by and large a loser. The fossil fuels required to ship crap all over this planet is just not the right thing to do.
Those imaginary jobs aren't worth it. The idea that cheaper goods means more sales so lets do it is Walmart shit that kills the planet.

(3,075 posts)of these trade policies completely proves it is not a good move.
and I think most people (especially the workers) realize this, feel like they've heard it before and know that it won't work. that's why most of us are against it.

That may or may not be true, but why should that statement stand as true without support?

(18,190 posts)because the Democratic president (who is still in office the and the de facto head of the party) is lobbying hard for it.
Obama should do the right thing and withdraw his support.

(82,383 posts)and it seems no one on DU is willing to do it. Using it to undermine the Democrats is all the play it gets here. Those using it do not really understand it but repeat their slogans about it without bothering to prove their assertions.
In global trade, it is going to be a good thing to negotiate rules with the other countries. Contrary to popular belief in the US, we do not have jurisdiction over the entire world.

(3,473 posts)What do you mean? The United States is the world's 2nd largest exporter with about $1.6T in exports annually. Only China exports more goods. There is nothing "low" about our numbers.
Now, we import far more than we export and are the world's largest importer ... giving us the largest trade imbalance of any country.

(19,877 posts)Lowering the taxes on exported goods would increase sales, leading to more manufacturing jobs here in America.
