GOP Close To Dumping Trump As Coup Plotters Near Votes Needed To Cause Nomination Chaos
By Jason Easley on Wed, Jul 6th, 2016 at 6:01 pm
Republicans are coming close to the number of votes that they need to dump Donald Trump at their convention in Cleveland.
The anti-Trump camp needs the backing of 28, or one-quarter, of the 112 Convention Rules Committee members, in order to place the issue before the full convention. A Wall Street Journal survey suggests it could be close.
In interviews, 20 members said they are willing to consider allowing delegates to be unbound, while 59 support Mr. Trump. The other 33 panelists couldnt be reached or did not respond to repeated messages.
.
Though a majority of the convention delegates are bound to support Mr. Trump, Mr. Evanss count shows just about 890 delegates are personally loyal to the New Yorker. Another 680 oppose Mr. Trump. That leaves 900 delegates who are presumed to be in play, he said. The stop-Trump forces would have to take nearly two-thirds of them to block his nomination.
In other words, if the vote gets to the convention floor on whether or not to unbound the delegates, all hell could break loose. Trump has shown himself to be an incredibly poor organizer, so if a fight for the nomination breaks out, the anti-Trump forces could find themselves with a chance to rid their party of Donald Trump.

He may have been alerted something was in the works so he did his part to keep the email non-scandal going.
Paul Ryan then took the baton and scheduled a hearing with Comey testifying to keep it going, all to continue to damage Hillary of course.
Could be they plan to keep this up until the repug convention, all the time trying to convert 8 more members of the rules committee to their side.
Once that's done they'll spring their plan at the convention to get rid of Drumpf, but even if they do, it won't work.
Trump's supporters will go bat shit crazy at the convention and I will be watching, with popcorn and Hillary will still win. No candidate from a splintered party has a chance.

(52,191 posts)having a horrible nominee at least shows people the importance of voting.
overturning an entire primary season shows people that their votes don't matter.
how's that gonna play for republicans in future elections?
having trump as their candidate will hurt, but likely only this one election cycle. in fact, the next whackadoodle republican would like positively normal after trump.
but if they turn the whole process into a circus, they might as well pack up the tent and go home. at that point they'd be better off just forming a new party.

(12,448 posts)The GOP is in panic mode, flailing around helplessly. I highly doubt they can or will dump Trump; they're afraid of what he'd do (and they should be).
They've been building up to a Donald Trump as nominee for 40 years with their Southern Strategies and racist and misogynist dog whistles. Thanks to Trump, they're no longer whistling; they're screaming. They own him. And he owns them, now.

Sure, the Rs and the MSM were counting on a Hillary indictment to reset to zero, but it didn't happen. Their hope was to portray the Ds as being in chaos, rather than the Rs. Now, they need to make the best of it after the convention. They will tear down Hillary as much as possible, blow up the slightest fault in her VP selection to monumental proportions, and hope that their investment in voter suppression pays out.
There's nothing to be gained by dumping Trump at this point. R candidates never win office based on their vision or qualifications, but in spite of the same. They depend on media spin and lies to win. Trump is just a larger challenge than normal. I'm sure Rove et al feel they're up to the challenge.
