Clinton, Sanders officially set Tuesday for unity rally in New Hampshire

The widely expected -- and in the eyes of some Democrats, somewhat overdue -- unity event between Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders is now officially on for Tuesday.

The two campaigns confirmed the schedule in announcements Monday morning saying that Sanders would join the former secretary of State at a rally in Portsmouth, N.H., the state where his thumping primary victory established Sanders as a formidable rival for the nomination.

Sanders and Clinton have been inching towards a joint appearance for several weeks since Clinton clinched the nomination on the eve of the California primary. In recent days, the two camps have reached compromises on several key issues for the party platform, and Sanders has gradually strengthened his statements in support of Clinton and opposition to Donald Trump.

Many Democrats, however, have said Sanders moved too slowly, and his leverage has waned as other major Democratic figures, notably President Obama and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, have campaigned with Clinton.

A lot of work went into it. Bernie, who was issue focused and shape the debate focused from the beginning, turned out to be far better received than anyone thought he would be, including himself.

He maintained that focus even after Hillary secured enough delegates to win on the first ballot of the convention and continued to lobby the platform committee. He earned concessions along the way.

The timing is just right.

in that typically insidious way most media have of inserting negative spin, should also have pointed out that in the process of using his leverage he got most of what he wanted into the platform, arriving at a consensus just about where his camp, the DNC, and Hillary's camp always expected it to be at this point.

If they were newly honest, most media would also finally confess that Sanders and HRC didn't actually have to move very much at all to reach this point, that most of the "division" was hype.

Doors open at 9 at the high school, the principals show up much later no doubt, but people are recommended to arrive early...probably about now.

His tardiness has only fomented discord and continued the battle longer than necessary. Momma always told me that you can't expect a cut or a scrape to heal if you keep picking-off the scab, and in my opinion, that's what's been happening here. Not only will we have delayed "healing" but because of all the picking, there will be an ugly scar that was completely unnecessary.

A few mistatements in this, in particular

Sanders has gradually strengthened his statements in support of Clinton and opposition to Donald Trump.

There has NEVER been a question about this.

As for the next point, who thinks the platform would have been that clear if Sanders had done what some have asked and disappear without fighting for his ideas. I am happy to see Secretary Clinton has changed her positions about college tuition, in particular.

But it is good that the party is unified before the GOP convention. The focus must be on Trump, not on the variations before different types of Democrats.

Huge move considering he has avoided coalition building for decades. So much positive has come from this primary cycle.

Has Bernie's camp confirmed an endorsement? What I don't want to see is Bernie doing another same ole stump speech and then just handing the mic over without a firm endorsement.

Twitter and FB with hatred when he does. It'll make him look worse. HRC has already earned the support of people who want to defeat the GOP.

a lot of left-wing radicals. Bernie is famous for not suffering those he considers fools, not even lightly. He apparently draws the ideological line directly to his left, not just directly to his right.

(Useless fools | BS | Corrupt fools)

While campaigning he tried to draw as many from all points of the ideological spectrum as he could, and he may feel he still needs to hold onto as many as possible for the future. But maybe not too. Or perhaps he'll feel they could always be rallied again when the time comes.

Whatever, I think there's a clue to his thoughts in the fact that he is now endorsing Hillary Clinton.

Significant differences existed between the campaigns, but Trump and a unity platform are making them look less significant.

Sanders promised ling ago to work to elect the Democratic nominee, and has already said he'll endorse. I think we can all read between the lines.
