TRANSCRIPT of Bernie's endorsement speech

I decided not to read it now because I don't want to cry at work, but here it is, for anyone who wants to read it.

Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process, and I congratulate her for that. She will be the Democratic nominee for president and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States.

I have come here today not to talk about the past but to focus on the future. That future will be shaped more by what happens on November 8 in voting booths across our nation than by any other event in the world. I have come here to make it as clear as possible as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton and why she must become our next president.

During the last year I had the extraordinary opportunity to speak to more than 1.4 million Americans at rallies in almost every state in this country. I was also able to meet with many thousands of other people at smaller gatherings. And the profound lesson that I have learned from all of that is that this campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face. And there is no doubt in my mind that, as we head into November, Hillary Clinton is far and away the best candidate to do that.

I was at a funeral during the speech, so couldn't listen to it. It's as solid in print as I expected it to be.

You have been one of Bernie's toughest critics, so I am curious what you think of the speech.

... but it really wasn't worth the wait. That doesn't mean it was bad or lacking... it was pretty standard fare that hit all the right notes and had a positive and motivational tone. But for what it was, it could have been given three weeks ago.

I'm mostly glad this is now behind us and everyone can focus on defeating the GOP.

I've been waiting very impatiently for Bernie's endorsement, but with as enthusiastic as he was today (and you really should watch the speech, I can't imagine his enthusiasm and passion comes across with just the text), I have to wonder if this wasn't a well-thought out plan between the two camps. Bernie got some very progressive concessions on the platform and that will help to bring a LOT of his supporters over to Hillary. You can already see it happening here on DU; Bernie supporters have been posting all day that they really liked her speech. I want this November to be an utter blowout; I want as many Bernie supporters to vote for Hillary as possible. And if he'd conceded a few weeks ago, I think his supporters might have been angrier and less able to make the switch.

Of course there are those who will never vote for her, but they would probably have never voted for the Democratic nominee...even if it had been Bernie. No one passes the purity test by the end of the process for some people.

Anyway, I wonder if there wasn't some subtle chess playing going on that helped with the timing of this endorsement. We now go into the convention with the party fully unified, the silly email business behind us, and a strong team lined up to stump for Hillary all summer and throughout the fall. I think we're very well placed, and at the end of the day it hasn't hurt us to wait for Bernie's endorsement.

Only my opinion of course.

He rants and raves, but if you look below the surface -- he's a sharp operator who knows how to play the angles to advance progressive goals. He is a real pragmatic progressive. He was that way in Burlington, and in Congress.

Interesting theory about the "chess playing" analogy.

Three weeks ago it would have seemed like he was just standing up there reading the script they gave him. Now, he can make a convincing case that he got her to adopt some of his policy proposals, and it gives his endorsement more credibility with many of his supporters.
