2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy sincere thank you to Hillary supporters who stayed calm while awaiting Bernie endorsing.
I noticed and appreciated your attitude in real time as the Democratic Presidential primary end game played out here at DU and in the nation at large. There were several of you who were quite clear about allowing Bernie to reach this point at the pace that made sense to him (and IMO for the Democratic Party also). Some of you openly stated opinions to the effect that as long as Sanders no longer played offense against Hillary that it was Bernie's choice to make when (and even if) he endorsed Hillary. And you gave him that space without criticism.Thank you all for that.
I long said that the deadline for achieving relative party unity was at the Democratic Convention itself. We got there before then. I believe that the discussions (and yes even negotiations) that took place between the two campaigns after the DC primary leading up to this point were constructive; good for the nation and good for the Democratic Party. While some DU supporters of Clinton were having tantrums over Bernie "refusing to endorse Hillary" or his supposedly "sabotaging party unity", others were willing to let it all play out without leveling premature accusations.
This is my hat tip to all the Hillary supporters here who were willing to wait patiently for this moment to come to natural fruition. You too played an important role in furthering the spirit of unity.

(42,862 posts)It sounded believable and sincere up until that point. But with that one word, the message was revealed to be a cheap parting-shot that was probably motivated by bitterness and resentment. So much for "furthering the spirit of unity", eh?

(22,912 posts)For the record I do not accuse all Hillary supporters who were "impatient" over how long a Sanders endorsement took of having tantrums over it. Many who were upset with Bernie not endorsing sooner simply expressed concern and other appropriate sentiments. Some in my opinion however were having a tantrum over it. I did not call out anyone personally - and I welcome this opportunity to clarify my opinion further. The people who I openly and sincerely thanked exhibited the patience I appreciated. I do not mean to chastise most of the Hillary supporters who didn't.

One person's understandable adult anger may be mistaken by another as a childish temper tantrum.

(22,912 posts)Sure I'm still upset about some of the attacks some here made against Bernie Sanders after the primaries ended. You and I might differ over individual instances but I bet we could find some we could both agree were "over the top" - same goes for attacks on Hillary of course, but she is the one who won the nomination crown and who benefits most directly from forging party unity.
This OP was meant to thank some very specific people who I think displayed good sense and foresight with their patience. I did not mean though to attack all who felt frustrated by the wait.

Let's take courage and common cause from this inspiring and symbolic event.

(58,785 posts)was particularly addressed to, but it is a nice one and timely. Moving on to defeat the ultraconservative anti-statists' threat to our nation does not require forgetting, or even forgiving for those who find that hard, but just refocusing.

(28,339 posts)You're very good with words, and I'm confident you have the ability to edit your OP so that your message expresses your sentiments without continuing to divide. If that is your intention.

(22,912 posts)The focus was on thanking some people, both for how they did and did not act, and the bulk of the OP did just that. I had no problem with clarifying my thoughts, so I did, twice in replies. This never had anything to do with those who simply said stuff like "it's time for Sanders to get drop out and endorse Clinton" or those who expressed concern that Sanders not conceding yet was somehow hurting Hilary's chances. Those type sentiments are not "tantrums" but some others IMO were. If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it.
And for the record, there are far more divisive things to say than that tantrums were observed. No doubt I've throw more than one here at some time over the years.

(13,218 posts)Oh, I did stay calm... but once Bernie became irrelevant, i.e. shortly after Clinton got to the target of ~2300 delegates. I haven't paid any attention to Bernie since. In fact, I don't even know if Bernie has already endorsed Hillary or is about endorse her or even something else - it's not important.

(740 posts)...you noticed me and I'd say "You're welcome" but it's not something I really gave much thought to. My thoughts were "He'll screw us or he won't" and I tend towards optimism even in times like these, so benefit of the doubt.

(22,912 posts)Any type of wait and see attitude was level headed. There would always have been time to get angry later if things did not work out. Your stance makes sense to me
