Pence is NOT very popular. He won in 2012 by just a few points over the Dem, and promised NOT to champion socially conservative issues. He, of course, actually nationally known for doing so, harming the reputation and business if the state. There is a very good chance he would have lost re-election.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence maintains a slight 40 percent to 36 percent lead over Democrat John Gregg — a virtual dead heat given the survey's 4 percentage point margin of error. Libertarian candidate Rex Bell trails with 2 percent

I think that was the most recent poll. An incumbent polling only at 40% is highly vulnerable.

for a VP race where you do not decide what is done and that you are likely to lose?

None that I can see at least. (losing VP nominees are rarely the party nominee in modern times)
