Melania fell on her sword so Donald could pull out of the race. He never meant for it to get this far anyway. Got in way too deep, had his little party at the convention, and in a few days he can say this is taking a toll on his wife and he's quitting because he's a loving, caring, empathetic husband. Like you, auntpurl, I'm loving the chaos that's engulfing the GOP. But if Donald Trump were to leave the race this late, it might not be good for Secretary Clinton and all Democratic candidates.

Right now, the country pretty much knows what Mr. Trump is all about. This is working well for our side. But if he quits, then the media will swoon over the white knight that the Republicans recruit as their savior. And let's face it, anyone except Sarah Palin and Louis Gohmert would look good compared to Donald Trump.

The excitement of a new candidate could reunite much of the GOP, especially the intellectual conservatives who have deserted the party over Mr. Trump. Additionally, the coattails of the Democratic nominee might not extend down-ballot as they seem to be with Mr. Trump in the race.
