(58,785 posts)was literally pointing the finger at Melania, making her the fall guy for this person's dreadful mistake? Uhuh.
I do believe Melania lied on the plane when asked if she was practicing her speech. Such a foolish lie, pretending she wrote it almost entirely herself and had no need to practice before delivering it to an audience of 30 million people. That's very likely what Trump wanted her to say, though.
I'll take this gift gladly because He. Must. Not. Win. But it's clear she's not exactly in charge of her life either.

(50,941 posts)so close to the original that they made it into the speech in the form they did. So then when the speech was given back to Melania how did she not see that Michelle's exact words were in her speech?
She knew these passages well enough to dictate them to the speech writer. She knew where she got them. And then, what? She forgot them between when she dictated them to the speechwriter and when she read the finished speech?
Bullshit.

CLEVELAND ― The revelation that Donald Trumps business staff writer Meredith McIver wrote the partly plagiarized speech given by Melania Trump on Monday night raises questions about whether his campaign is illegally commingling corporate and campaign resources.
McIver does not appear to have any official role in the presidential campaign. Her letter acknowledging her role in the speech debacle appeared on corporate letterhead from the Trump Organization. And she is not listed as being paid by the Trump campaign on any available reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Corporations are banned from donating directly or through in-kind services to political campaigns. McIver could have volunteered her services, but her offer to resign from the Trump Organization suggests that she was acting within her job responsibilities. (Donald Trump rejected that offer.)
Given the identification of McIver as an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization in both the statement and letter, and her resignation from the Trump Organization ― printed on Trump Organization stationary ― and not the campaign, it appears that corporate resources may have been used to prepare the speech, said Jordan Libowitz, communications director for the campaign finance watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. That would make the speech an illegal in-kind corporate contribution from the Trump Organization to the campaign.

(51,129 posts)"My name is Meredith McIver," it began, "and I'm an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization." McIver explains how she was working with Melania on the speech when the candidate's wife read out some passages from Michelle Obama's 2008 convention speech. Those passages were then accidentally included in the draft Trump used, for which McIver, later in the note, apologizes. Done and done; the truth has come out.
But there's another problem. Notice the letterhead of the statement: The Trump Organization, which is to say Donald Trump's personal business. And notice how McIver describes herself: As an employee of the Trump Organization, not the campaign.
If Trump used corporate resources to write a political speech, that could be illegal.
"On the face of it, this looks like a corporate violation," explained Lawrence Noble, general counsel for the Campaign Legal Center. And that is "a violation of federal law. It can result in civil penalties to the corporation and the campaign." If the campaign used corporate resources "willingly and knowingly," the offense is a criminal one.

(51,129 posts)A Democratic super PAC has filed a federal complaint against Donald Trump's campaign with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday that charges the campaign with breaking campaign finance laws regarding Melania Trump's speechwriter.
The complaint, filed by the Democratic Coalition Against Trump, alleges five violations. They are: illegally accepting direct corporate contributions, accepting services from a volunteer that were actually compensated, use of the Trump corporate name or trademark to facilitate campaign contributions, illegal use of corporate facilities by a campaign volunteer and knowingly allowing volunteers to exceed the transportation expense limit.
Meredith McIver, the speechwriter in question, admitted to using words from Michelle Obama's 2008 speech in Melania Trump's speech. But in the same apology letter, she admitted that was serving as a volunteer to the Trump campaign, and working via the Trump Corporation to aide the campaign, which is against campaign finance laws.
...........
I'm uncertain who would face any criminal charges involved, but that would likely be Donald J. Trump since his name is literally all over this. Lawyer up Donald.
And, my personal advice, now would be a good time to exercise your right to remain silent.
