(58,785 posts)this class action against Trump under the RICO federal racketeering law, which goes to trial November 28, after the election. There'll be a pre-trial hearing in August, then nothing until Trump appears in court.
There's a second California one, and the State of NY is bringing a third. The latter two don't have court dates set yet.

(19,948 posts)Just hours after Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination in Cleveland, a federal judge in San Diego said he plans to allow former students who claim to have been cheated by Trump University to take the billionaire candidate to trial.
Trumps lawyers argue that sales "puffery" doesnt amount to racketeering in an attempt to end one of two class-action lawsuits by former Trump University enrollees who claim they were cheated with false promises into paying as much as $35,000 for real-estate seminars and workshops.
U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel said at the start of Fridays hearing that his tentative ruling is to reject Trumps request and let the case go forward. Curiel said he will issue a final ruling later. Hes set a Nov. 28 start date for the other trial.
Trump has already injected politics into the case, claiming earlier rulings by the judge, born in Indiana to Mexican immigrants, were retribution for the candidates pledge to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Separately, Curiel is also considering whether videos of Trumps sworn testimony should be made public over the billionaires objection.

(1,999 posts)There was absolutely no reason to delay the trial until after the election. And this is the judge Trump says is biased against him?
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)putting a presidential candidate on trial before the election would inappropriately influence the election.
The press should be getting interested before the election, though. You know the sort of shows time-share hawkers put on, with seminars, information packets, and so on? Trump U hired one of the companies that designs and produces those things to provide the "lesson" plans and materials for students and the sales materials, strategies and spiels for the speakers/"professors."
Btw, Trump's already lost his bid not to have to reveal his net worth in court.

(1,999 posts)Because "proof" isn't required to find in favor of the plaintiffs. Just a preponderance of the evidence.

(36,389 posts)there will be plenty of pretrial motions, and every one will be dutifully reported on the front page, above the fold; the backstory of the Trump University scam will be told, again, and again, and again.
You know what I mean, Vern?

Too fanciful?
Too much like a John Grisham novel?

(17,175 posts)... before the latter was even formally indicted, let alone convicted. So Mr Pence would have to pardon Mr Trump quickly to match that.

(58,785 posts)A small but really slimy one. This is one of dozens of stories of cheating and defrauding, or attempting to in this case.
While developer Donald Trump was busy getting the Republican Partys presidential nomination this week, he was losing big in a Miami-Dade County courtroom.
Circuit Court Judge Jorge Cueto, presiding over a lawsuit related to unpaid bills brought by a local paint store against the Trump National Doral Miami golf resort, ordered the billionaire politicians company to pay the Doral-based mom-and-pop shop nearly $300,000 in attorneys fees.
All because, according to the lawsuit, Trump allegedly tried to stiff The Paint Spot on its last payment of $34,863 on a $200,000 contract for paint used in the renovation of the home of golfs famed Blue Monster two years ago.
Trump Nationals insistence that it had paid enough for the paint despite a contract, according to the lawsuit, caused The Paint Spot to slap a lien on the property and Cueto to order the foreclosure sale of the resort.
In time, Donald Trumps company got the judge to cancel the June 28 courthouse auction after it placed the $34,000 in escrow, and the case was put on hold while Trump Nationals owner, Trump Endeavor, considered an appeal.
But the lien remained.
Im happy I have a judgment, said Juan Carlos Enriquez, owner of The Paint Spot. But he hasnt paid yet."
