2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumKaine is a very good choice
1) He has the experience (Mayor, Governor, U.S. Senator--serves on the Foreign Relations Committee)--he has the most important attribute a vice president should have--the ability to step into the presidency at a moments notice.
2) Politically this is a sound choice as well. HRC has, I believe, sewn up an important swing state--Virginia with 13 electoral votes. (President Obama won VA by 3.8% in 2012 & 6.3% in 2008). This means that resources that might otherwise have gone into VA can go elsewhere. His presence on the ticket could possibly be a big asset in neighboring North Carolina (15 electoral votes) as well.
3) He have connections to two other key states--born and spent his early years in Minnesota. Kaine grew up in the Kansas City area and graduated from Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Kaine received his B.A. in economics from the University of Missouri in 1979, completing his degree in three year
4) He took a break during law school to work with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Honduras. Kaine worked in Honduras for nine months from 1980 to 1981, helping Jesuit missionaries who ran a Catholic school in El Progreso.
5) He is fluent in Spanish and that is a big plus in this election year. I'll bet he will speak Spanish at some point in his acceptance speech.
He wasn't my first choice (truth be told I was kind of hoping for Elizabeth Warren) but he is a solid, good choice both on experience and politically and I think will be a real asset to the Clinton ticket.
