The others look like a warm-up act, you have their performance to riff off of, and people remember the last thing they heard best.
I expect next week to cheer me up considerably.

That's how conventions have always been done.
Al Gore's convention was after George W. Bush's while Kerry in '04 and Obama in '08 went before their Republican foes. It's also why McCain tried a "Game Change" by announcing Palin when he did, trying to steal the thunder of Obama's Veep announcement just before the Dem convention.
