DNC rules meeting agrees to a compromise on superdelegates

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The role of superdelegates could be significantly reduced in future Democratic presidential primaries under a compromise deal struck at the Democratic National Convention rules committee Saturday.

Efforts by Bernie Sanders supporters to pass amendments eliminating or limiting the power of superdelegates failed to win approval at the committee meeting in Philadelphia. But campaigns for Sanders and Hillary Clinton worked out an agreement to create a "unity commission" to revise the nominating process, including changing superdelegate rules, which won near-unanimous support.

The 21-member commission will study a number of issues, including how to improve access to caucuses and how to broaden the party's appeal. For superdelegates, the commission's recommendation is that Congress members, governors and other elected officials should remain as unpledged delegates, but that other delegates would be bound proportionally to the primary results of their state.

Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver endorsed the plan, saying it would "result in the reduction of superdelegates as we know them by two-thirds." The Clinton campaign also expressed support for the commission.

More willing to compromise with its former opponents. I hope Bernie supporters who are on the fence see the extraordinary efforts the Hillary campaign has gone to to make sure Bernie and his ideas have a seat at the table.

6. Based on the behavior I've observed so far, I truly doubt that they will see (or appreciate) that.

Time to move forward with winning over new voters who really want to defeat Trump. Not Bernie but many of his supporters just don't seem to care. Who are they fooling? Even with all the reforms they won I believe they simply will not be around supporting the Democrats two and four years from now. Unless Hillary abdicates to Bernie, they will never be supporters of unity.

WITHIN the Dem Party who want to impose their views - and ONLY theirs - on everyone else when their candidate did NOT win the majority of delegates in the primaries.

Even in 1968, those who protested had a point. Humphrey entered the race too late to participate in ANY primaries, relying instead on "favorite son candidates" and endorsements from party bosses. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubert_Humphrey_presidential_campaign,_1968

That has NOT been the case at all in 2016. Both candidates competed in ALL primaries. The SDs in 2016 will only serve to confirm the primary results, not to overturn or subvert them.

There is seemingly a small but raucous minority of Sanders supporters who will ONLY be satisfied when the DNC upends ALL primary/caucus results and anoints their candidate as the nominee.

Just ain't gonna happen. The seemingly endless primary season is over. Hillary won. Period.

Wanting to improve the Democratic party is so dag nab childish.

By the way: "The Clinton campaign also expressed support for the commission."
