Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate for president, thinks progressives should vote for her even if it means Donald Trump would defeat Hillary Clinton as a result.

“Sometimes you have to lose elections to build your power,” Stein told RI Future in a wide-ranging, 35-minute interview Wednesday. “Because we don’t get out of this hole unless we build our power. We don’t change this system unless we challenge it. In the words of Frederick Douglass ‘power concedes nothing without a demand.’ It never has, it never will. We’ve been doing this lesser evil thing for quite a while right now and this politics of fear has brought us everything we are afraid of. All those things we didn’t want we’ve gotten by the droves because the lesser evil essentially silences us.”

Anybody willing to vote for Stein over Clinton needs their head examined.

Huey long believed that FDR was beholden to corporate powers, and wanted to challenge FDR from the Left. Long wanted to redistribute wealth from the rich to everyone. He planned to challenge FDR on the left from a new political party based on his Share the Wealth clubs, and figured he could capture 10% of the vote, throwing the 1936 election to the republicans. He would then ride in on his white horse in 1940 as a Democrat and sweep to power cleaning up the GOP mess that would have resulted. That was the plan and it was actually might have worked, if he didn't get shot in 1935.

One difference, Stein would never the get the Democratic nod in 2020-- but perhaps she feels an ally might.
