Sanders, seeking unity, finds hold-outs in his movement

By David Weigel and John Wagner July 24 at 10:06 PM
PHILADELPHIA — If Bernie Sanders gets his way, the first day of the Democratic National Convention will be a tribute to his presidential primary campaign, a celebration of a “political revolution” that leaves nothing but good feelings.

Bernie Sanders is not getting his way.

While the senator from Vermont calls for Democrats to unite behind Hillary Clinton — whom he endorsed two weeks ago — thousands of his supporters have arrived in Philadelphia to protest the results of the primaries. Not even the resignation of Democratic National Committee Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, which Sanders had called for since spring, has gotten every Sanders supporter on board.

Some, including activists who attended a “People’s Convention” on Saturday or walked in a climate march on Sunday afternoon, are planning to back a third-party candidate. Others are dreaming of ways to deny Clinton or her running mate, Sen. Timothy M. Kaine (Va.), their nominations.

If Hillary cared about getting the support of his primary voters, she stepped in it by re-hiring DWS. It gives the perception that the beneficiary of the fix is rewarding the fixer. Totally tone-deaf choice.

She gave DWS a volunteer position, probably as a way of getting her to step down. You do understand that Hillary cannot fire her? You do understand that she was hired by the current president of the United States and that Hillary is not going to snub him by publicly humiliating her?

These are not his hold outs. The ones being discussed were never educated on his platform and don't even come close to promoting progressive causes. Fuck them. Time to move on. We achieved the unity necessary to move into the general. We are in a great position and it's time to focus our energy on non-ratfucking groups.

some of those who supported him are Greens or members of other progressive left parties who don't vote democratic or republican. But if he can get 80% of his supporters to come around to HRC (many already have, of course) then she will win.
