Related: About this forumWhite Privilege at the DNC convention
I see that people decided to do exactly what would make them look like entitled jerks at the DNC convention. Booing damn near every black person that took the stage. Black people don't have the privilege of attempting to burn shit down just because we got out voted. We have been getting outvoted since time immemorial.. Funny how the second the shoe is on the other foot, we end up with wildly screaming and ranting jeers from folks who feel like they are owed something.
Naked racism and ignorance is on display and boy do they look ugly as hell. Black folks will never join such a disrespectful group of people in any revolution. This just killed any chance of expanding.

Well, my dear....the issue is not "INTEGRATION," the issue is "neighborhood schools!"
We don't mind "INTEGRATION," we don't like "busing!"
I saw that up close and personal about forty or so years ago--some ugly stuff up in there.

Exit polls of his supporters and visual evidence from the caucuses and of course the actual states he won all point to his base of support being far whiter on average and in the aggregate than Clinton's or the Democratic Party as a whole.
No, it's a majority white movement with some token minority voices. It has never had significant support from minority voters. Cornell West and Nina Turner don't disprove it.
That's just factually true. It doesn't matter if you've met some exceptions. Of course he has some minority supporters, and you know some.
Whether you think it was rooted in white privilege or not (I do), we need to be straight up about the demographic facts.

(12 posts)As a gay white man those protesting are demonstrating their privilege more than their hatred for Hillary.
How? Let me explain. Those of us that are a minority have a lot to lose if the democrats lose this election. Marriage Equality, voter ID laws, immigration, and because of Supreme Court appointments a woman's right to chose is on the line, and the affordable care act that has given millions healthcare for the first time. But if you are white and middle class or above you don't feel that same sense of desperation that I feel. I am afraid of Donald Trump and I can't afford the price of his presidency. Please reconsider the harsh rhetoric and booing at the sound of her name. WE NEED YOUR VOICE and YOUR HELP to PROTECT the voiceless.

For me, I'm angry that after 8 years of Obama, we have 1/4 of American kids living in poverty. A higher % of children of color living in poverty. The Dems don't even talk about this.

(1,151 posts)In particular, the whole "false consciousness" shit needs to be dumped into the dustbin of history. It's basically an excuse to
1: exonerate white people from their racist rationales for supporting GOP policies against their own economic interests
2: provide an excuse as to why ultra-pure movements fail to gain any power (WAKE UP SHEEPLE)
And I'm saying this as a VERY far leftist but it's less about ideology and more about tactics and practice.

(8,678 posts)I have made the clear and unequivocal statement that support Clinton and support her choice of Kaine.
These protesters are outliers and do not have the backing of Sanders or his former campaign.
They are no different than the PUMAs in 2008.
They acted without the approval or backing of Clinton or her former campaign of 2008.
That all being said, I take exception to the "white privilege" meme being shopped around almost daily.
No, I realize you are not directing it at people like me but it's hard to not take constant comments like this and it not start to feel awkward around here.

(5,018 posts)in many ways. Which is to say I'd say it's more nuanced than white privilege, as it isn't just black people being booed, but I think many people have already formed ugly, bigoted caricatures of Bernie supporters in their mind and are attacking those caricatures. It's a type of bigotry where they must twist the facts to make the stereotype fit. Now references down thread to lulu lemon, Wigmans, etc., it really brought out the bigotry on DU. It's the kind of shit seen on Free Republic, some of it word for word, I'm surprised no one has brought up latte drinking, hybrids and yoga yet. White liberals, amirite?
And the line between respect and protest is so subjective. People protest issues they are passionate about. I see a lot of people think BLM's tactics are "disrespectful". No doubt Paul Ryan thought that the sit in was "disrespectful".
"Wild rants and cheers from people who think they're owed something". Some of this language, the "disrespectful", the "think they're owed something", etc., rhetoric seen on conservative websites in respect to groups like BLM, and it's not surprising that the same language is used to try discredit groups for protesting rather than addressing the issues they bring up. Tone trolling. Ignoring the message, or even twisting it, to demonize people. Pretty gross stuff, but oh so usual.

(2,577 posts)You see, Marcia Fudge is my representative in Ohio. I love her and was SO excited to hear she was the convention chair. I tuned in just to hear her ... and I got to hear her be treated with disrespect. I was devastated. She deserves so much better. Then I kept watching and saw Elijah Cummings get similar treatment.
So people aren't happy about TPP ... but Marcia Fudge and Elijah Cummings weren't TALKING about trade policies. The timing was just so tone deaf. At the time I did think to myself (and I'm white), Huh, white privilege much?
I'm also sorry that so many responses here have been equally tone deaf.

(135,425 posts)I think Sanders needs to pull some credentials and kick some people out.
Some of his "supporters" refused to extend him that personal courtesy. Just a few of them, but they embarrassed him and made him look like he started a forest fire. A controlled "bern" is one thing, but he is unable to control these (very few--I repeat-not the majority by a long shot) jerks who think it's "cool" to disrupt a speaker and call it "protest." Even when the person they PURPORT to represent asks them to refrain from bellowing and making jerks of themselves.
All he wanted was for his delegates to behave like adults. A couple of people gave the whole group a bad name.

The targeting of black speakers just reeks of ratfucking. Even the most clueless liberals will at least make an attempt to spread the booing around equally and just wallow in their own cynicism. It's as if they wanted the visual of white people booing and shouting down black people who had little if anything to do with what they were shouting about.
My facebook feed has plenty of Trumpers and Johnson supporters trying to provoke Bernie supporters into opposing Hillary/Kaine.

(111,137 posts)No matter how vehemently you think you're right and have all the answers, that other person over there thinks you're full of shit. Politics is the art of reaching a compromise with him, meaning you have to give up some of your vehemence and get what you can, while giving him some of what he wants that you hate.
Some of the obnoxious jerks outside are undoubtedly false flaggers. The ones inside are just getting their feet wet and eventually it's going to dawn on them that nobody gets out of the mud pit known as politics squeaky clean.

(1,945 posts)It wasn't just black speakers booed.
If you're watching cspan you will notice it is widespread across speakers. The disabled woman and the woman talking about mental health did not get booed.
You are generalizing about how unpopular protest works and then doubling down by putting white privilege on it.
How do you think the two Mississippi delegations were treated by the Democratic convention in 1968? Do you think their protest was appreciated? How about the AIDS protesters activists in the 1980s?
Protest is uncomfortable and confrontational. It's the nature of it.
Most of us AAs are not liberal or progressive. I don't think most of us would join something liberal or progressive. I'm just grateful those liberals from the 1960s were willing to join us when we wanted civil rights then and are willing to join us when we protest state power in police shootings now.
