White Privilege at the DNC convention

I see that people decided to do exactly what would make them look like entitled jerks at the DNC convention. Booing damn near every black person that took the stage. Black people don't have the privilege of attempting to burn shit down just because we got out voted. We have been getting outvoted since time immemorial.. Funny how the second the shoe is on the other foot, we end up with wildly screaming and ranting jeers from folks who feel like they are owed something.

Naked racism and ignorance is on display and boy do they look ugly as hell. Black folks will never join such a disrespectful group of people in any revolution. This just killed any chance of expanding.

I saw that up close and personal about forty or so years ago--some ugly stuff up in there.

Janet Langhart (she later married former SECDEF Bill Cohen) was a young reporter going into places like South Boston to do live TV standups; I feared for her safety.

It's was sickening to see the blatant arrogance of them acting like agents of Trump. They damn well know that hurts efforts to keep that orange bloated prat out of the White House.

We need to CLOSE all the primaries (yes I know its the states call but Sec Clinton (soon Pres Clinton) on down can bring them to heel) so this farce doesn't happen again. They also need to get rid of the caucuses, as they disenfranchise my fellow PoC.

Any reasonable person can google image search "Bernie Sanders rally" and see thousands of photos that are overwhelmingly full of white faces. Exit polls of his supporters and visual evidence from the caucuses and of course the actual states he won all point to his base of support being far whiter on average and in the aggregate than Clinton's or the Democratic Party as a whole.

No, it's a majority white movement with some token minority voices. It has never had significant support from minority voters. Cornell West and Nina Turner don't disprove it.

That's just factually true. It doesn't matter if you've met some exceptions. Of course he has some minority supporters, and you know some.

Whether you think it was rooted in white privilege or not (I do), we need to be straight up about the demographic facts.

I watched and listened in awe as Elijah Cummings was speaking. When he was telling the story of his father and his history. I could barely hear him over the boos and jeers of the Bernie delegates and he rose to the occasion and made them look so small! I have nothing but respect for that man and no words for the disgust I feel for the people booing over him.

There has been a direct correlation between the level of disruption and booing from the Bernie delegates and the minority status of the speaker. It is real, it is pervasive and it is coming from delegates at the Democratic Convention. I see it and I won't forget.

Mon Jul 25, 2016, 07:44 PM

As a gay white man those protesting are demonstrating their privilege more than their hatred for Hillary.
How? Let me explain. Those of us that are a minority have a lot to lose if the democrats lose this election. Marriage Equality, voter ID laws, immigration, and because of Supreme Court appointments a woman's right to chose is on the line, and the affordable care act that has given millions healthcare for the first time. But if you are white and middle class or above you don't feel that same sense of desperation that I feel. I am afraid of Donald Trump and I can't afford the price of his presidency. Please reconsider the harsh rhetoric and booing at the sound of her name. WE NEED YOUR VOICE and YOUR HELP to PROTECT the voiceless.

I think it's a fight for economic justice, which affects us all, people of color even more.

For me, I'm angry that after 8 years of Obama, we have 1/4 of American kids living in poverty. A higher % of children of color living in poverty. The Dems don't even talk about this.

As someone who cares about this, and other issues like TPP, which both Hillary and Kaine were for before they were against it. Kaine is for fracking. I'm dismayed and feeling very disappointed that I have to vote for Hillary because Trump is a crazy man. I wish I had someone progressive to vote for, someone who cared about poverty and the environment as I do.

Mon Jul 25, 2016, 08:08 PM

Anti-poverty programs cost money.
In accordance with the Constitution, only Congress can raise funds.
So without a Congress to write and pass legislation providing funds to help people out of poverty, the most progressive President in the world will twiddle his thumbs.

So, frankly, your accusations are without merit and show a lack of knowledge of the government and how it works.

I wasn't watching the first few speeches to see the booing. So I can't speak to that.
However, I was watching the interviews with the sweaty protestors outside. Their words were factually wrong and their sentiments were troubling. One even said "4 years of Donald Trump would be better bc he won't be able to get anything done. So nothing is better than Hillary."
He will get to appoint judges like Scalia! Mike Pence will fight against protections for LGBTQ individuals, He can stop any orders to protect our NATO allies allowing Putin to invade Eastern Europe and re establish the Soviet Union. You'll be feeling the Bern from the NEW COLD WAR.
This isn't the choice of the lesser of two evils. This isn't hyperbole. Trump is really dangerous!

It is all over the news what they did earlier this afternoon and evening.

Yet the boos and disruptions of speakers of color also came at awkward times. Cummings, for instance, was giving a speech on his personal background and the importance of diversity in the Democratic Party — but his words on social and racial justice were completely drowned out by the protests.

Fudge pointedly asked for delegates to "respect" her after trying to talk over the boos — even during lines like, "Where we lift each other up and every person from every race, religion, and sexual orientation is respected."

These protesters are outliers and do not have the backing of Sanders or his former campaign.

They acted without the approval or backing of Clinton or her former campaign of 2008.

in many ways. Which is to say I'd say it's more nuanced than white privilege, as it isn't just black people being booed, but I think many people have already formed ugly, bigoted caricatures of Bernie supporters in their mind and are attacking those caricatures. It's a type of bigotry where they must twist the facts to make the stereotype fit. Now references down thread to lulu lemon, Wigmans, etc., it really brought out the bigotry on DU. It's the kind of shit seen on Free Republic, some of it word for word, I'm surprised no one has brought up latte drinking, hybrids and yoga yet. White liberals, amirite?

And the line between respect and protest is so subjective. People protest issues they are passionate about. I see a lot of people think BLM's tactics are "disrespectful". No doubt Paul Ryan thought that the sit in was "disrespectful".

"Wild rants and cheers from people who think they're owed something". Some of this language, the "disrespectful", the "think they're owed something", etc., rhetoric seen on conservative websites in respect to groups like BLM, and it's not surprising that the same language is used to try discredit groups for protesting rather than addressing the issues they bring up. Tone trolling. Ignoring the message, or even twisting it, to demonize people. Pretty gross stuff, but oh so usual.

I tuned in just to hear her ... and I got to hear her be treated with disrespect. I was devastated. She deserves so much better. Then I kept watching and saw Elijah Cummings get similar treatment.

So people aren't happy about TPP ... but Marcia Fudge and Elijah Cummings weren't TALKING about trade policies. The timing was just so tone deaf. At the time I did think to myself (and I'm white), Huh, white privilege much?

I'm also sorry that so many responses here have been equally tone deaf.

It wasn't just black speakers booed.

If you're watching cspan you will notice it is widespread across speakers. The disabled woman and the woman talking about mental health did not get booed.

You are generalizing about how unpopular protest works and then doubling down by putting white privilege on it.

How do you think the two Mississippi delegations were treated by the Democratic convention in 1968? Do you think their protest was appreciated? How about the AIDS protesters activists in the 1980s?

Protest is uncomfortable and confrontational. It's the nature of it.

Most of us AAs are not liberal or progressive. I don't think most of us would join something liberal or progressive. I'm just grateful those liberals from the 1960s were willing to join us when we wanted civil rights then and are willing to join us when we protest state power in police shootings now.
