The Latest: Sarandon Waits to Be Convinced to Back Clinton

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA — Jul 26, 2016, 7:03 AM ET

The Latest on the Democratic National Convention (all times local):

6:25 a.m.

Susan Sarandon says she's waiting to be persuaded to support Hillary Clinton before giving her vote.

The actress is attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia and has been taking part in demonstrations with various groups.

Sarandon has been an outspoken supporter of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. In an interview with left-leaning website Democracy Now, she says she wants to see what Clinton's plans for are on issues such as fracking and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. She says she wants to be "convinced" by the likely Democratic nominee.

In a separate interview with left-wing online network, The Young Turks, Sarandon calls the leaked e-mails that show the Democratic National Committee and chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz strongly backing Clinton for the party bid, "disgusting." But she adds, "it doesn't come as a surprise."

we are here, for sure. But Sarandon's become awfully predictable. Wonder what forum she picked this "woo me" schtick up from? For all we know, maybe she hangs here.

I can't imagine signaling the world I can be placated with some schmoozing and an apology. If I was going to demand, it wouldn't be stroking my hurt feelings, it'd be specific: "If you want MY vote, contract to hang the Kochs up by their feet and shake them down, then deposit them in jail."

Let's be real. It's about which candidate Sarandon supported and which she is opposing.

On the other hand, I don't know how any candidate woos anyone who doesn't trust or believe him or her--and Trump and Hillary both have that issue.

I am a Sanders supporter (surprise!), but I, too, thought Sarandon could have chosen her words better on that one.

That said, what a celebrity says about a candidate doesn't affect my voting choices. They have a much bigger megaphone than I do, but that is not because they are political geniuses. It's fun when they say nice things or insightful things and pretty much irrelevant when they don't.

Sarandon is a beautiful, older woman and a good actress. She is also intelligent and I believe her intentions have always been good. My admiration for her outside that realm began when she spent her own money to make a TV commercial against invading Iraq, when our war drums started beating and before the vote.

There is so much important stuff that is off the rails. That Sarandon is not in love with Hillary is not important, nor does it make her a bad person. Plenty of other celebrities are. Seems to me having fun with what they say would be more fun that dissecting what Sarandon says. Your candidate is the nominee. Enjoy.

in his or her beliefs, why can't the truth that matters to that person about each issue be sufficient explanation?

I think soaking up proven lies in order to vilify someone who disagrees with one's views is an indicator of major character flaws. But that's hardly a new insight.

Bearing false witness against others is actually listed as one of Christianity's 10 deadly sins, and no doubt right up there in the other major religions also. But, hey, can't really be so wrong if EVERYBODY does it, right?

Well, everybody doesn't do it.

hostility, stress, intense frustration and fear from imagining the forces of evil always win -- these not only shorten lives but end up re-forming the faces of people who live that way.

Back to the topic, I'm fine with Sarandon's supposed positions on issues -- good that she has some and cares about something. My big problem with her, a former major favorite, is that knowing this about her makes me unable to watch her movies without memories of her mean and dishonest idiocy getting in the way.

without proofreading.

My distaste for Sarandon is completely political. I have no opinion of her acting abilities other than to note that even her famous roles are in relatively minor films, and she hasn't been in anything commercially prominent in recent years.

Why she is washed up and just how washed up she may be are irrelevant to the point that her stardom doesn't make her a particularly credible political voice.

She lives a completely luxurious 1% life. She faces no real consequences if Trump prevails. Her arrogant claim to speak for the oppressed is belied by her petulant self-aggrandizing media presence.

Supporters like her hurt Bernie Sanders in the primary more than they helped. Her support is certainly irrelevant to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. Might even be good for Hillary to piss off a few prominent leftist loony birds like her.

Sarandon is a rich woman who travels by limousine. She is also a play-Marxist who spouts radical doctrine in fine cashmere.

She is a limousine Marxist. She's a hypocrite. What I said had nothing *whatsoever* to do with taxes, although if she's such a radical you'd think she'd give away some of the limo and cashmere money.

You might as well be a republican, because you twist words and impute meanings to win arguments. Pffft.

Susan Sarandon is a creep. She has said she'll vote for Trump. She and her fellow limousine radicals like Cornell West (makes half a million a year giving speeches) actually harmed Bernie Sanders because most democratic voters could look at supporters like that and see they were rank hypocrites.

Good day.

I'm using what is a damn fair example. Limousine liberal is exactly a term out of the Republican lexicon and you changing it to Marxist is keeping it in the same ballpark. Every rich person who has ever advocated for higher taxes has been pilloried by the right, for being hypocrites who aren't serious unless they just voluntarily give more of their money to the state. The point was not that you were talking about taxes, and holy shit that you would even miss something so obvious. The point was that you are doing the same thing by trashing Sarandon for having socialist leanings while being rich, as if that in itself proves her a hypocrite. That you can't see it is pretty astonishing. Hell, give some credit where credit is due.

Ms. Sarandon is the queen of the stupid set. However, as a rich white lady who gets chauffeured around to fashion shows and radical rallies alike and who sent her kids to the best private schools, she likely stands to do very well under a President Trump (lower taxes on her millions for sure), or at least not to suffer much. She's far to useful an idiot for him to send her to Guantanamo anyway.

If you can vote for Trump out of spite or rage at the imperfections of the Democratic Party, you either are voting your actual interest (you're white and privileged, in other words) or you were never going to vote for a democrat not named Bernie, or you're an idiot or a person who lets emotion trump reason, both categories of voters I submit we are better off without and never had in the first place anyway.

The ideologically motivated far left has sabotaged the Democratic Party over and over for decades.

first of all , going last means you are THE main speaker for the day. it shows how much respect they have for him to be given that slot .

and then they said some other things which showed they were not informed at all.

and tonight while the mothers who lost their kids were speaking they walked out and held a candlelight vigil for themselves for how the democrats treated them horribly .

... who cares? Seriously ... Who the fuck cares what she thinks? She's a kook.

I wonder if she knows that John Edwards, whom she supported, also voted for the IWR. Why didn't it matter then? Why did it only matter when it comes to Hillary?

She's just another single minded, rabid and irrational Hillary Hater.

and she is not stupid. Eventually she will have to decide who is best, Jill Stein or Hillary. Jill Stein will never win enough votes to beat the top pick. That leaves one left.

what a washed-up Naderite thinks. Way too many people slinking out of the fading spotlight trying to grab the last fleeting crumbs of importance before they are relegated to the ranks of the unimportant.

She has so much to lose under a Clinton presidency, like...

Oh wait, no she doesn't. She's fine no matter what happens come November. Must be nice to feel that way - so secure and warm in a privileged cocoon. I am wholly unable to relate.

The degree of arrogant juvenile assholishness in this thread is disgusting. She is only asking what any Democrat with any kind of principles would ask of a candidate that has been contradictory and/or vague on a couple of important issues.

My gawd the hatred of the "liberal Hollywood elite" in here rivals the dregs of uneducated baggerville.

We are going to have to convince a lot of voters, not just her. The kind of attitude displayed here is terrible and destructive. You don't get votes by saying fuck the voter - to any of them. So ugly!

She, like many BoB's, are not thinking with their heads. They are making decisions emotionally. Like creationists and climate deniers, you can't convince them with facts, so don't try.

is not uninformed. It would be a little higher level if people on these boards could discuss principled positions with a generous read as to the place they are coming from. You don't have to agree with everything Sarandon says, and you can believe she's flat out wrong, but as somebody who very publicly stood against Bush and the Iraq War, and has been on the right side of history more often than Clinton has, maybe people could try to remember the things they used to like about her.

Oh did she vote for Nader? Is this club only two moneyed parties and nobody else gets to play? You have reasons why she's wrong? Talk about those then and quit besmirching the fuck out of people. And yes, I've seen it on both sides, so Clinton fans aren't the only culprits.
