2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWith all the hacking it seems Hillary's server was the most secure box on the planet.
DNC server: hacked.
State department servers: hacked multiple times.
Gmail, yahoo, etc.: tons of hacks of prominent people.
Corporate systems: lots of hacks.
Uber-secretive NSA: massive leak.
Secure diplomatic cables: leaked all over the place.
But for all the hand-wringing about her email server, it was never hacked.

(90,644 posts)Or maybe they have already hacked the RNC and are holding it all for blackmail the way J. Edgar Hoover used to.

(11,619 posts)I just find it odd that someone would hack the DNC and ignore the RNC. Both would have donor lists and information that could be monetized.
It is curious to me why hackers would hit one and not the other.

(7,113 posts)OPM stores personnel data of all federal civil service employees, as well as all the security clearance files of all cleared government and contract personnel -- well over 5 million people in total. Chinese hackers captured it all.
As one of the many folks who had a security file at OPM, I worry what the Chinese will do with our fingerprints and every fact about our lives, personal and professional, not to mention SSN.
And by the way, friends who used to work at the Pentagon say the Chinese are constantly snooping in the DOD, with mixed results.
See, that's why I can't get too exercised about Hillary's server. All they can do is suppose she probably got hacked, but at least it's not a sure thing like all these other hacks.

(6,819 posts)federal government tell me that the lack of tech sophistication in DC offices is a well known fact. (Case in point, the FAA, where even the air traffic control system is so antiquated as to be laughable.) there are folks who argue that HRC set up her own server precisely because of the ineptitude of State Department technology, and its vulnerability to hacking.

(32,822 posts)One of the technical complaints about it was it lacked any sort of diagnostics to determine whether it was or wasn't hacked.
I'm going to see if I can find out exactly what sort of mail server it was.
In edit, looks like it was running Exchange. For two months it was directly connected to the Internet without ssl but back in the day I don't remember early Exchange supporting ssl.

(1,330 posts)So does this mean Director Comey was grossly negligent or merely extremely careless for not making sure they were secure?

(52,196 posts)microsoft, e.g., has the resources to provide excellent security but they are a giant target so hackers keep trying and keep finding ways.
hackers aren't as interested in smaller servers. easier to hack, perhaps, but less payoff.
similarly, if you want to avoid having your car stolen, you can either pay through the nose for a high-end tracking security system or be like me and just content yourself to drive a 15 year old car that no one else would want anyway
