(14,915 posts)We have a military. We can't pretend that we don't. We need to defeat ISIS, we need to conduct ourselves with honor in war.

That sounds like Trump to you?

(259 posts)Courageous for him to do from that as well to provide that endorsement. The Vast majority of Generals are Republican.

Completely disrespectful to heckle our military. No matter what your views are, these men sacrifice their lives.

(85,971 posts)...with the U.S. still engaging in strident military deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, not forgetting the military strikes, as well.
I think there should be respect shown for dissent, as well as support.

(34,857 posts)They're privileged white assholes who probably haven't sacrafised a goddamn day in their lives - and it shows, as they chant down a vet who lost his leg in war.
They're no better than those assholes at the GOP who mocked John Kerry with purple heart band-aids.

My point about veterans stands. It was in response to the complaint about respecting the feelings of the poster's veteran father.

bigtree
(85,971 posts)...no more war.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Especially when it's toward someone who isn't even a politician but rather an average American who put their life on the line, and lost their leg, to defend this country. Heckling him like that might not be mocking but it's just as ugly
bigtree
(85,971 posts)...'anti-war' isn't an expression of hate.
Many disabled vets are anti-war.

(34,857 posts)Will you condone that too? It's rude. It's tasteless. It's ugly. They've done nothing to advance their cause and have embarrassed their movement. I'd be surprised if Bernie isn't completely mortified by these insane group of supporters.
bigtree
(85,971 posts)...it was likely Code Pink chanting 'no more war.'
I don't think it hurt any one or anything, and I don't believe it was meant to. Concern for soldiers and veterans is inherent in anti-war advocacy for peace.

...has always been respected here.
I don't think veterans have some sort of immunity from protest, especially when they're on a war rant.

(2,872 posts)For sheer fact that I'm currently in, getting medical'd because my knee is fucked beyond repair-- I know just how much a person has to bust his ass to get to where he is, and honestly, seeing people that a couple months prior, I'd have called my allies screaming their head off at him? Infuckingfuriating. Yes, I believe we need to withdraw from our conflicts. Yes, I believe that any war is war for wrong reasons-- but you don't shout down a wounded veteran. You never shout down a wounded veteran.

(256 posts)Which is rare for a Democrat, is telling of how dangerous they think Trump is. I'm pretty sure if McCain were running they'd be at the RNC not with us. I have never seen an election like this.

(989 posts)Yes we would all like to have no more wars. But if we do, i would want men and women like those on stage to be fighting for us. Hope they and the military they represent never have to.

SirBrockington
(259 posts)25 vets commit suicide every day. Most because they get shitted on by privideged assholes the moment they
get back who don't even begin to get or understand their sacrifice. Too bad those who didn't agree with the concept of
conflict could have just
kept quiet or, OR, even perhaps stood up and applauded the MEDAL OF HONOR award winner who lost his leg so that
other vets watching, in similar situations, could see for themselves the support and respect the public would have and maybe, just maybe, feel appreciated just a little bit.

I'm going to guess that I have spent a bit more time actually working in VA hospitals with our vets than you have though.

mythology
(9,527 posts)No more war is simplistic and ignores that there is a responsibility for inaction.
bigtree
(85,971 posts)...but that doesn't make anti-war sentiments 'irresponsible.' The implication is that warring is an inevitable response. There are myriad responsible and credible actions contemplated and proposed behind the protestations.
Have we really devolved here into a forum which upholds vacuous demonstrations of patriotism over principled dissent?

(37,364 posts)little recognition of the complete and utter decimation of stability in the Middle East by the Bush administration. They thoroughly broke it and ripped open centuries old wounds. We and the rest of the world will be living with this for quite a long time. Good enough reason for never allowing Republicans in the WH or not making sure that Dems have clear majorities in both houses of Congress.
I hate war and I survived one there. It is not as simple as leaving. We should never have been there at all, but Bush & Cheney with Blair marched us there under false pretenses. The oil fields were lost before the initial assault on Baghdad had ended. There is more than one proxy war going on in the region. I don't know how any country disengages abruptly.
