2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHey Assange- do you want Trump?
Hey Julian- you need to put a lid on it. Some of the stuff you have published has been of value, but smearing Clinton will do nothing but help get Trump elected. Is that what you want? I don't really care what you have or think you have. Unfortunately, we are faced with a choice of Clinton or Trump, or wasting a vote on one of the minor candidates. In any reality, I'll take Clinton over "The Donald" any day. This country is fed up enough to actually elect that narcissistic creep, which scares me to the core. He is an empty vessel, most kids in elementary school know more about geopolitics than he does. Like Hitler, he is scapegoating, while making diffuse promises of "I'll fix everything. Just trust me". He's not as sick as Adolph, but they have more in common than not. So Assange, do us all a favor and shut up. My choice didn't get the nomination; so it goes. A Trump as POTUS would be like Dubya on steroids. I simply can't believe people fall for his crap. His promises, if carried out, would be the largest expansion of federal spending since the New Deal. He's going to do all that, AND cut taxes too. Of course you are, because you are The Donald. Assange is an egotist as well- but if he really does his thing to help people, then he needs to shut up about Clinton. RJM

(18,250 posts)Here's Chuck Todd's introduction:
"Julian Assange, who comes from the Embassy of Ecuador in London. He is currently facing extradition to Sweden."
What's missing here? The words for rape. Why did you leave those two words out, Chuck? Not all viewers know exactly why Mr. Assange is in that embassy. Without all the facts, some people might think that Assange's sanctuary in an embassy has something to do with his brave and noble connection to Wikileaks.
Would those two words have damaged the narrative that Julian is some kind of righteous hero?
Hey Chuck, don't people have a right to know exactly what kind of person Julian Assange is before they trust his word, or is the real goal to peddle spin by deliberately leaving out important information?

(4,533 posts)That is the charge. That he did not withdraw when told to. The woman agreed to have sex.
He says that is not true.
Maybe the two words - for rape - should be expanded.
We're there a trial he would be acquitted because it is he said she said and she was angry with him for other not criminal reasons.
But if he goes to Sweden he will be turned over to the U.S. and will be placed in a supermax prison for life.

and follow it up with this...
"Maybe the two words - for rape - should be expanded."
"That he did not withdrawal when told to"
That is rape and many men deny charges. I think the question should be, why do you feel it deserves to be expanded upon?

(4,533 posts)The whole story suggests assange may be culpable for some prison time. And he has agreed to be tried if sweden agrees not to turn him over to the US. Sweden will not agree. I don't think the crime warrants life underground with basically zero human contact. Do you?

(18,250 posts)It could have been Chuck's first question. Assange would have had the opportunity to wax philosophical about "Trumped up charges filed to insure that I would be imprisoned for the rest of my life." Think of how far it would have gone to further ennoble Assange in the eyes of his followers.
Chuck Todd has never had any problem devoting his full-throated umbrage concerning allegations against Hillary Clinton, even the ones that have been disproved. Why are allegations against some people discussed ad infinitum, while allegations against others don't even rate a mention?
And if Assange is afraid to return to Sweden because he might be extradited to the US, he should at least explain why he wasn't afraid of extradition from Sweden to the US when he traveled there in 2010.

* I don't understand why you're saying that the phrase "for rape" should be expanded. It sounds more like an attempt to narrow it by making distinctions between "legitimate" rape and "rape that isn't really rape because the rapist feels entitled to do it" rape.

(37,549 posts)sleeping woman who did not consent to such an act.
That's rape. And that's what he admitted to doing. See, Julian's defense was not that he didn't do that act.....but that it was not legally rape.

(4,533 posts)The condom she took to the police had no DNA of assange. Maybe she made up the story. She published a guide on how to get revenge for bad sexual relation behavior. Is it at least possible she is just seeking revenge for some noncriminal bad behavior? Massage has agreed to submit to trial and possible punishment provided Sweden agrees not to turn him over to the US. And as you know the US sends whistleblowers to life underground, alone, in a small cell. Do you really support that punishment for this crime? I don't oppose a trial for rape and punishment if he is found guilty. But innocent or guilty once Sweden has him he ends up in a us prison worse than Kafka could dream up. For telling the truth about shameful foreign aggressions in our name.

(37,549 posts)the trial findings at Belmarsh. Penetrating a sleeping woman without consent is rape.
Interestingly, not a single one of your allegations was brought up by Assange's defense. In fact, I challenge you to find any of your allegations actually made in a courtroom, anywhere. This is because Assange has said one thing in court, and something else in the papers. My suggestion is that you read what your hero has said in the former.
