"How Paul Manafort Wielded Power in Ukraine Before Advising Donald Trump"

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/01/us/paul-manafort-ukraine-donald-trump.html?ref=politics&_r=2

This link (with excerpts and additional information) was originally posted by StrictlyRockers in "Latest Breaking News," but it was subsequently locked for having been posted in the wrong forum. The New York Times article details an ongoing involvement of Paul Manafort in the turmoil in the Ukraine. The story of Manafort's association with Putin and Yanukovych resembles a James Bond thriller. It boggles my mind that Republicans attempted to derail Hillary's campaign with bogus Benghazi investigations, while they ignore Manafort's association with Putin and Yanukovych and the Ukranian conflict. I find it hard to believe that any candidate for the presidency of the United States could survive a revelation of this magnitude. It appears that Manafort has tried to put lipstick on an authoritarian pig more than once.

Many thanks to StrictlyRockers for fetching this article. The locked thread (with excerpts from the article, as well as additional information) can be found here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10141539138.

3. Trump, Manafort, Putin, and Yanukovych ... with a little Russian mob thrown in.

From the article:

Until he joined Mr. Trumpís presidential campaign this year, Mr. Manafortís work in Ukraine had been his most significant political campaign in recent years. He began his career in Republican politics in the 1970s and extended it overseas to advising authoritarian leaders, including Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaire, Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines and Mr. Yanukovych.

Manafort's role in Trump's campaign sounds like an attempt to undermine President Obama's policy with regard to the Ukraine, as well as to prevent Hillary Clinton from carrying on this same policy as president. Putin and Yanukovych do not want Hillary to win, and I suspect we will see more Russian involvement in this election. Manafort may or may not be an intermediary in this effort. It will be interesting to see what more the New York Times will turn up in their investigative reporting. They know they are definitely onto something big here.

2. #ComradeManafort has some explaining to do

Exactly how are he and his Republican cronies tied up with Russia?

Who owes who? How much?

Who is the ENFORCER in the deals you have made with Russia?

Show us your tax returns. Show us #ComradeTrump's tax returns. Now.

etc.?

7. Very creepy. The Manafort link between Trump and Putin is scaring the shit out of me.

Republicans may have nominated a "Siberian candidate" whose purpose is to disturb international relations not only between the United States and Russia, but also between the United States and its allies. Trump may be unwitting about what is going on, but his nastiness toward anyone and everyone he doesn't like may be a diversion from a deeper and more sinister game plan devised by entities that have no business in our political election.

6. Donald Trumpís Campaign Manager Worked for Warlords, Arms-Dealers and Dictator

Even the most brutal dictators and the bloodiest warlords could benefit from having a friendly public-relations operative in Washington. Access to high-ranking officials goes a long way in the nationís capital. Thereís always somebody willing to take on the vilest of clients ó and one of those somebodies is Paul Manafort, Donald Trumpís new campaign manager.

Manafort has worked on behalf of an Angolan warlord, a Lebanese arms-dealer, the Pakistani spy agency that went on to create the Taliban, the Putin-aligned president of Ukraine and a whoís-who of 1980s dictators. He helped enrich clients who left trails of death and destruction in their wakes.

To be clear, Manafort also has extensive experience working as a political operative in the United States as far back as 1976. He worked for the presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Robert Dole, and George W. Bush. His record suggests heís pretty good at his job.

Manafort got his start delegate-wrangling for Gerald Ford in the 1976 Republican convention, where he demonstrated precocious political talents. Tutored by Bush-consigliere James Baker, he went on to manage Reaganís campaigns in 1980 and 1984.

9. Manafort is dangerous.

His job is to make dictators look respectable. And he is Trump's campaign manager, no less. He could be chief of staff or secretary of state in a Trump administration. Think of the international mess he could cause in that role, as he directs Trump to abandon NATO and stand by while Russia moves against the Ukraine as a first step in reconstructing the "Soviet Union." The balance of world power would shift catastrophically with a Trump presidency. Trump's sole talent is his ability to profit personally from breaking things. As president, he could break NATO and just about everything else.

10. MANAFORT HAS COMPANY!

There are about five more staffers who have ties to Russia. Rick Gates for one. Turns out that John McCain's campaign manager in 2008, Rick Davis, was a business partner with Paul Manafort. Rick Davis recently gave testimony to Cayman Island officials regarding a business deal Manafort and his partner arranged with a Russian oligarch and Putin Pal. The business venture lost $26 mil and the oligarch wants to know where the money went...thinks Manafort stashed it away somewhere, allowing the business deal to collapse. Check the link that covers this. Also note how much business is going on behind the scene between Russian and US business investors . How they PRESSURE our government officials AND even pressure the FBI to allow shady Russian business investor into the country . Much more going on than the public realizes. An eye opener .

14. This should be brought up whenever Manafort is on TV

All questions directed to Manafort should be about Russia/Ukraine.

19. That is way past ugly! But thanks for keeping this thread alive.

I think that Trump's unwitting cooperation with Russia's expansionist agenda is the greatest danger we face.

There are many reasons to dump Trump, but his relation to Putin is HUGE.

20. Everyone should ask Manafort about his connection to Ukraine/Russia

Every single time he is on television.
