2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTraveling overseas
I brought up in another post that I'd wear a f$#k trump t shirt if going to Scotland. Just to make sure the people I encountered understood what I thought of him. Right now even though the talk is about what the politicians overseas think about dipshit. I really think it could extend to even American tourists being harassed. And it would be much worse if he were elected.

(4,311 posts)I don't think you need to worry. Except in Paris. They hate Americans on principle. Actually, they hate everyone who isn't Parisienne.
Don't talk loud, you'll be fine.

(1,907 posts)I don't think they have as many batshit crazy people overseas.

(17,339 posts)We've been to Paris over 40 times in the past 20 years and have never encountered any anti-American attitudes.
Always have found Parisians to be very welcoming. And they don't hate Americans.
We both speak moderately good French, so perhaps that makes a difference.
Sorry you haven't found it so.

(4,311 posts)I mean, I lived in France. But sure, whatever you think. I'm glad you've had good experiences.

(1,438 posts)I've been to Paris twice and have never met anyone who hates Americans.
Maybe the ones that you have heard about are just reacting to the behavior of some Americans overseas?

(4,311 posts)I've spent a lot of time there, and lived in France too. The thing about Paris is that they know they need the tourist money, and sometimes they can even pretend to be polite, but the contempt they feel for Americans and really any non-Parisienne persons is palpable, if you know the French culture. My husband speaks accentless French (he lived there for many years) and because they hear him speak to me in English, they will answer him in English when he speaks in French, just to get a dig in.
The xenophobia problem is rampant all over France, but its epicenter is in Paris.

(17,339 posts)The reason people have 'bad experiences' in Paris has a lot to do with the attitudes they have going in.
They expect it to be like "home" or the Las Vegas version. And they've heard so much about "Parisian attitude" that they look for it.
YMMV
