He is making money, and intends to make more after the elections are over by starting his own version of fox bullshit news. I also think he wants to do as much damage as he can to the republican party, for some reason. By the time he is done, they will be lucky to come up with any "real" candidate that isn't bat shit crazy.

(23,855 posts)we are seeing a major shift at the national level, the long-term outcome of Nixon's successful-at-the-time "Southern Strategy" to reinforce the Republican party with members of the disgruntled "Dixiecrats". Reagan took it to the next level by bringing in the white evangelicals. however, the Republican party has never had the interests of its racists, bigots, and misogynists as its top priority; instead, the plan has been to throw them a bone every once in a while, keep them at arms length, and build up both monetary and representative advantages for industrialists and the military-industrial complex.
now those chickens have come home to roost, the racists are tired of getting nothing but hollow rhetoric in return for their votes, and they've found a way to take over the Republican party. so the Republican party is descending into a racial madness of its own making, and will gradually dissolve into a number of disparate white-power factions. over the next decade, it will become increasingly difficult for them to nominate sane candidates and their numbers in Congress and state houses will diminish accordingly.
meanwhile, that will leave the Democratic party as the de-facto centrist majority party of the nation. many of the GOP's "national security" and "fiscal conservative" members will leave the Republican party for either the Democrats or the Libertarians, to avoid the taint of the Republican party's increasingly repulsive identity politics. as the shift continues, this migration will become increasingly opportunistic, and the GOP exiles will increasingly use their $$$ to exert control over the Democratic party.
how things proceed from then, 8-12 years down the road, depends quite a bit on whether Sen. Sanders & his loyalists choose to stay active in the Democratic party. if so, their adherence to progressive values could greatly mitigate the incoming influence of ex-Republicans.
my prediction for the next decade is a not-so-gradual hollowing out of the GOP power base and ascension of a dominant Democratic party that promotes social liberalism, foreign policy hawkishness, and an incoherent economic mixed message.
Thank you for yous very interesting opinion

(37,748 posts)I thought then and I think now, his primary goal in running is to get better name recognition for his brand. It's his brand, his licensing deals rather than his steadily declining business real estate investments that keep his life-style as is. Win or lose, he's solidified his brand in the short-term.

(395 posts)He is a con man.
It already reported that he is billing his campaign unusual high amount for the use of his planes, hotels, resorts, staff, and probably a host of other things that have yet to be discovered.

(11 posts)In my mind :
With Bush Junior,we have the classical situation of a dummy with a big oedipial complex and a army of vulture around
Bush junior would be better than is father and would kill Saddam only to say that he was better than is father .
The ultra liberals lobbies encouraged her ,above all because he was very dummy and because ,with him,it was possible to win a fortune (war and reconstruction)
With Trump you have an other situation : he is an idiot (not a dummy) ,with no culture, and he is shame of this .
This men, with his money had all what he want except the honours .
Thisd men is able to sacrifiate all his fortune to became président .
In this case,he is not so dummy than Bush, his reactions are not prédictibles there is the first reason for that the ultra liberals group don't play the game with him .

(56,582 posts)The short con is simple (and frankly brilliant): his campaign is spending most of its money buying stuff from vendors Trump owns. He's basically giving donor money back to himself.
The long con is that he's setting himself up to make a media network to compete with Fox.
