2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhy isn't the Press reporting this speech for what it is.
Donald Trump embarrassed himself with his trip to Mexico. He wanted to look Presidential with the Mexican President standing beside him. Instead Donald Trump looked weak and indecisive. The Mexican President even called out Trump for his lying about what was discussed.
That caused Trump to look for retribution. Hence the new "hardcore" immigration speech. Donald Trump was hurt and embarrassed. Trump has to make an example out of these lowly Mexicans.
That is Trump's overall mental reaction to rejection.

(24,726 posts)I think the acceptance and treatment of Donald's Day as anything but terrifying dystopia is a sign of deep sickness in our country. People are becomng inured to his racism and hatred. Worst nightmare.
i am terrified that after labor day he may be leading .. please tell me i am wrong . i want to be,, but i feel like the media wants him so badly to be President .. this like 2000 all over agin.. GOTV me must stop him

(1,910 posts)I agree, they are acting like his Mexico trip was not a mess and his speech not just hateful pandering.
This is getting scary. Trump dominates prime time TV while Hillary is rarely seen. He is ratings gold and cable news loves it. If he dominates the debates with bluster over substance, we are in deep doo doo.

(37,364 posts)Get on FB & Twitter or e-mail right now and start hitting the media for it's disparate handling of info on Trump and Hillary and on its nod to the rise of the Klan segment of society. Hit it on the language of false equivalency and their notion that Trump is a cute fad. I have. Shame them. Joan Walsh was on Twitter last night actively trolling other media for their coverage of all things Trump. Fight back on the what Trump is communicating because it is through communication that this hate speech and political movement is spread. Demand truth in reporting and analysis. Push back.

(128,844 posts)It's a similar strategy that RMoney used when he went abroad. Luckily the British press let him have it, and their sharp critiques were blasted far and wide... and it wouldn't surprise me if the Mexican press is doing the same except in this case, no one here in the U.S. wants to bother to translate it.

(68,552 posts)report this speech as not helping him at all...and that the speech played to his base. And all agreed, he can not win the election without expanding his base and now he can't expand his base. And we also have the Mexican president calling Trump a liar basically. The wall was discussed. Of course cowardly Trump did not discuss it.

(58,646 posts)in her late night, post-speech show. Basically gave a historical connection with the collapse of a major party in our country and the resultant turn to xenophobia and racism. Went over the death of the Whig party in the 1800's and the resultant calls for anti-immigrant stances across the country that led to the Know Nothing party's brief tease with national prominence. If you didn't see it live, I'd recommend watching the replay at the website: http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show.
I know a lot of people consider that ancient history, but it rings true with me, especially considering 20th Century examples of how xenophobia and racism grew out of political chaos in Germany and Italy as a result of the Great Depression and the weak democracies formed after WWI in much of Europe.
Rachel is a political wonk and enjoys the "process," possibly too much. She's starting to sound more like someone who is genuinely concerned for the future of our country should Trump not be defeated. As a gay woman, she has a lot at stake of a personal nature should the RW assholiness prevail.

(33,310 posts)the incessant harping about the "liberal media" from the rightist media has made the centrist, corporate media terrified of deviating from the journalist code book. even when the fate of the nation is at stake. this was said, this side thinks X, this side thinks Y. treat the candidate as legitimate no matter what. play it down the middle, save the opinions for the editorial page.
4. I believe they are genuinely confused at how to treat a Trump speech/action. do they spend all their time treating what he said as serious policy proposals and provide analysis? do they just point and laugh? they are being Gish Galloped; the BS is non-stop. Trump is owning the news cycle because they don't know how to look away from a car wreck.
in the meantime, he's saying "America First" over and over. you'd think someone might want to google "Fascism" at that point...
