2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhere is the media?
Why are they continuing the false equivalence horse race nonsense? Why aren't they roundly rejecting the racist, sexist, xenophobic philosophy hiding behind candidate Trump? The man is a preposterous, cartoonish, blowhard but the ideas he spews are dangerous. They are so far from the vision of America embraced by 99% of the population and can only be described as a dystopian nightmare.
If the "media" wants us to respect their work - they are going to have to earn that respect and right now they are failing miserably. When this election is over and Trump is defeated - the media will have to answer for their many failures during this election season.
I'd love to see a poll covering people's trust and respect for the "news" media and the empty headed on-air talent reading the words on the Teleprompter. I'll bet pubic confidence in the media is lower than confidence in the Republican Party and congress.

(5,049 posts)This is bigger than any one candidate - this is about a philosophical shift in what it means to be America and American. This particular brand of xenophobia mixed with a blatant white supremacist philosophy isn't even Nazi-ism... It's a form of national canibalism where the raging fires of hate will consume all that is not white. In short it will destroy our proud history and legacy as a nation of immigrants.
So I ask - is the media a willing co-conspirator, destroying the promise of America, or are they simply useful idiots. Either way - we need to hold them responsible for their role in the devolution of the American political scene

(22,669 posts)but only because that's what they see. Right now, rethugs are in power of congress and they control radio and much of what goes on in corporate television.
It will be through massive defeat at our hands that they will begin to listen.

(1,950 posts)So how do we tell them how little respect there is left for what once was called journalism? How do we send a message that they are failing at their jobs? How do we demand more from them? I see them bristle when they are challenged. Clearly they think they are earning their paychecks. They really think they are "reporters."
It's pathetic. What they do is not journalism and they are not journalists. While they may think they are upholding the honorable position of the "4th Estate" they are all closer to the National Enquirer than the time honored work of Murrow, Cronkite, and Rather. Hell - Hunter S. Thompson was a better journalist on acid than anything we see on TV today.

(83,746 posts)I stopped watching them all years ago. I can pick up plenty of news off the internet. Also we should be inundating them on social media and direct contact with the stations themselves to express the fact that we have had it with their coverage. They are not even pretending to be fair or balanced.
You are right they are nothing more than pathetic. They aren't journalist, they are brainless hacks with a script waiting to collect their big paychecks every Friday. They have become dangerous to us all with the propaganda they are spewing.

They are perfectly willing to see this country burn, as long as they get the ratings and page views. That's all they care about.

(5,049 posts)If they are incapable of delivering the news as journalists, it's time to reject the whole idea of corporate driven news. It's time to look elsewhere for the facts - un-colored by corporate greed. It's beyond time to let them know they are no longer needed by a vibrant democracy in the 21st century. It's time the on-air talent learned they worthless to us.
What is needed is an alternative that values the principles of journalism over the profits.

(2,067 posts)Are you saying you want the media to pick for you what ideas/philosophies are worthy of your ears/eyes?
Maybe I'm old school, but I prefer they just run the damn cameras, run the damn microphones, and let me interpret that data how I choose.
And while I agree with you that this idiot's ideas are so far out there it's hard to imagine anyone agrees with him, your 99% figure is way off base. History has shown that regardless of who the candidates are, the 2nd place guy is still going to get somewhere in the neighborhood of 40% of the vote.
