NYT Scrambles To Rewrite Botched Story On Trump’s Immigration Speech

In Donald Trump’s much-hyped speech on immigration Wednesday night in Phoenix, which came the same day he met with the president of Mexico, the GOP nominee showed no signs of “softening” the hard-line immigration policies that have won him legions of supporters. But that message didn’t come across in the New York Times’ initial coverage of the speech, which hailed Trump’s address as “an audacious attempt” to transform his image and reported that he shelved his proposal for a massive effort to deport immigrants who are in the country illegally. The story went through extensive edits when readers pointed out the story inaccurately characterized Trump's speech.

Readers on social media were quick to point out the inaccuracies and suggest the Times had bought into the campaign's song-and-dance about a softer touch on immigration issues.

About an hour after the original story was published, the story underwent a substantial rewrite to eliminate language about Mexico pitching in to solve the immigration crisis.

The Times didn't run an editor's note explaining the story had been substantively changed, but the edit-tracking site NewsDiff clearly shows the extent of the revisions. You can see the full edits here.

SO eager to push a mostly negative CGI story, SO eager to continue on with the drip, drip, drip of a non-existent email story. SO eager to make tRump seem "normal." SO eager to make this presidential election into a horse race, and mostly SO eager to continue to say that Hillary Clinton should share "equally" in the blame for the racism that's spewed out of tRump's nasty, filthy, lying, racist mouth.

New York Times loves the Rightees and they are the paper of record. Used to read this rag daily for years, and suddenly the story lines swung mostly hard right with planted stories just waiting for reaction to those stories. Remember they had a Reader Response Person, what a joke, try e-mailing a comment, good luck on that. Response e-mail will be a form letter written by their Legal Team. They just plain do not give a crap about wither their stories are fact or fiction.

during elections, they're so invested in the idea of the "horse race" that by god they'll do everything they can to make it neck and neck, if it looks like reality is getting in the way of their preferred narrative. And they go easy on Republicans and attack Democrats because they're trying to evade the stupid right-wing "liberal media" attacks. If we hadn't had twenty years of right-wing hacks like Limbaugh and Hannity et al inveighing against the evils of the "liberal media" then outlets like the NYT might not be bending over backwards to try to pretend Trump is something other than a manifestly unfit ignoramus. (One gets the feeling that if the GOP had nominated a monkey instead of Trump, the NYT would report on campaign managers' efforts to train said monkey to not fling poop as a "successful pivot" and "rebranding".)
