2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTallahassee - still no power
Going on day three. Once I accepted that I had lost hundreds of dollars of food it has not been too bad. Many neighbors lost much more.
Been spending time with the grandson. Legos, playing in the hose and we just returned from a city pool that reopened. Mayor waived the usual charge.
Thankful I am able to buy more food when the time comes. Many are not.
I've had my grumpy moments but all in all I've still had a great Labor Day holiday. Probably lost a few pounds as it is hard to eat at much with the heat.

(26,259 posts)On the up side, I didn't lose any food, because my house was so cold you could see your breath. I blocked off the den, which is where the fireplace is, and spent most of that time flat on my back in a down filled sleeping bag, topped by two feather comforters. I think I changed my clothes once, during that week, and ate less than a meal a day.
Finally got a generator, put it on the screened in porch, in front of the open door. The wind picked up and shifted and blew the fumes back into the house, and I ended up with a good dose of carbon monoxide poisoning. The only reason I didn't die was I was curled up on the couch, most of the time, so I was below the level of the carbon monoxide build up, until I stood up. And I only stood up to check on the generator, and then head out to buy more gasoline so I was getting good periods of fresh air, over that two day period.
Once the power came on, and I showered, I was so hungry but the lingering effect of the carbon monoxide was that it totally screwed up my taste buds, it and was months before I could properly taste food, again.
The moral of the story is, power outages suck, no matter where they happen. I hope you are back on the grid, soon!

(14,449 posts)Mine does up to 300 or 500 dollars. You may have that.
Never thought of that. I should check.

(11,949 posts)We lived in Downtown Orlando. Went 13 days.
Maximum suckage. Fortunately we had family nearby so did get to spend some nights in AC.
But I'm beginning to scope out a place to do laundry so I can go back to work Tuesday. 30,000 still out.

(11,949 posts)And several neighbors up the line had their lines torn off their house. They had to be fixed before the utility would recollect. But they had to hire their own electrician as the utility would not reconnect to the house. And all electricians were busy. It was hell.
I bet you are up in a day or so. From the photos I have seen it was nothing like Charlie. We had winds of over 100mph.
Good luck. It will be a good story in a decade or so

(42,301 posts)I'm in west central Florida. The west coast of my county got lots of flooding but we're on the East side and had few issues.
That said, I went through Andrew in SFL in 92 and will never forget it. I'm glad that you and yours are ok and only food was lost. It's like a big, hot, annoying camping trip in a way.
I hope you get your power back soon. Oh, and f#{> Rick Scott.

(16,199 posts)It sucks. I went an entire week without it in Irene.
I finally bought a Generlink and a generator and that's saved several more fridge loads of food since.

(34,136 posts)The wife bought the second to last one at Lowe's then their power was restored. They brought it over, hooked up the fridge & freezer, borrowed a window unit, and got me hooked up. I think it was just in time to save the freezer full of food - the ice was still solid that I had bagged on Thursday right after the power went out. Still no running water since the well is well away from the house.
They even let me go over to their house today for a shower!
If you haven't been able to report your outage - keep trying. They seem to be scheduing crews where the density is highest. Talquin had all three of the meters on the farm listed as "On" when I checked. That may be why they have had no crew out here since the storm. Of course, it's hard to report when you have phone or internet - ours has been up and down.
