WASHINGTON Donald Trump enjoyed strong support among evangelical Christians in the primaries, upending the strategies of rivals such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who had assumed that Trump's crudity, divorces, shifting views on abortion rights and embrace of gay marriage would alienate religious-minded voters.
"I got the evangelicals," Trump boasted Friday at a major gathering of social conservatives. "There are no more decent, devoted and selfless people than our Christian brothers and sisters."
Winning in November will require keeping that bloc motivated and enthused, and Trump has one especially strong argument to offer: If he loses, Democrat Hillary Clinton gets to fill a Supreme Court vacancy.
"A Trump administration, our Christian heritage will be cherished, protected, defended like you've never seen before. Believe me," he said.

(23,946 posts)Is this what Bannon is creating, a far right fascist cult of personality in a 70 year old fat man that he thinks can withstand 60 more days of scrutiny before it all goes down in flames for a final time?

(61,691 posts)except that it's a voting bloc he wants.
A month ago he told a meeting of pastors that he wants them to help him get elected because, get this: if he can do a few good things as president, he might get into heaven. He doesn't understand that Christians believe in salvation by grace, or the part about confessing your sins to God to receive grace. IIRC, once he told a reporter that he didn't think he had any sins to confess.
RWer Dobson said Trump is a "baby Christian". I think he's still in the blastocyst stage.
