(42,298 posts)At least by a true media. Pneumonia is an illness, not a serious chronic condition. She's being treated and will be fine.

(65,290 posts)until I finally managed a couple of hours free to get to the doctor. (I was in my 40s at the time. Now I am 66.)
It is dangerous to not get pneumonia treated. People can die from it. But if one is under a doctor's care and gets treated in a timely fashion, then it is just an annoyance.
My doctor chewed me out for iron-womaning through it, because that really was dangerous. I had been using DayQuil to suppress my symptoms, so when I deliberately didn't take it the day I went to the doctor, so she could see my symptoms, I was really, really sick.
Nearly 30 years ago my younger sister nearly did die of pneumonia at age 34, because she had 3 young kids and was toughing it out, the way we women do when others depend on us. She assumed she was just unable to get rid of a lingering cold.
Women are always pushing themselves to take care of everything for everybody. Hillary, fortunately, is in a position where she can get excellent care to make sure she is in top condition all the time. I am sure she got to the doctor and got treated with antibiotics as soon as she felt that she was sick rather than just tired.

(6,551 posts)It seemed to me that in the last week, Hillary did not look well. I thought it was fatigue given her relentless schedule of activities. Did anyone else notice this?
So glad to know that she'll be better!

People still die from pneumonia, often because they did not take it seriously enough.

(25,841 posts)I see a lot of here.
And pneumonia doesn't just kill those who don't, won't, or can't afford to go to a doctor. It really is a serious disease.
I heard on NPR a couple of hours ago that she was diagnosed on Friday and told to rest. Ignoring doctors orders isn't such a bright or Presidential thing to do. Really. What is she thinking? What are her advisors thinking?

(58,785 posts)grueling schedule, and that's only what we know about -- not all the meetings and briefings running into the small hours, the fires that have to be dealt with, and so on.
She famously also has a lifelong good-girl habit of always doing her homework and showing up to everything fully prepared. Bet it's very hard for her to push the files and memos aside to choose much-needed rest instead.
Just today I was wondering again what it must be to feel as if the weight of a nation to save it from a President Trump disaster was on her shoulders.

(22,250 posts)I have been diagnosed twice with severe bronchitis twice and was wiped out for a week. During the onset before I finally broke down and went to doc in the box, the most complicated thing I could do was watch the Food Channel. My hair hurt! The term "not feeling well" would have been an understatement at that point.
Anyway, it sort of crept up on me. I had been progressively feeling unusually tired which I put down to working overtime. Decided to just veg out all weekend and woke up on Saturday sick as all get out. The doctor said I had a severe bronchitis but the radiologist's report said it was pneumonia.
If this crept up on her like that one did on me, with the schedule she keeps - I am not in the least surprised she felt faint.
I am just glad she is OK, diagnosed and being treated

(751 posts)Somehow this is good news as it explains everything?
I wish there was more realistic discussion on events impact on the election. Instead we have every bad and good news being spun the same way.
It's not good news, per se, but it does explain what happened today.
This should stop the breathless speculation and concern that has been rampant here today.
I haven't spun anything; I simply posted real news. Sorry you didn't like it. Feel free to post your own realistic discussion.

(1,384 posts)You really think this is a deal breaker for people when it is a common, treatable, yet albeit serious illness? Thanks for your concern. Perhaps people on this board are just happy that the speculation is over and it's not something more serious.
kcjohn1
(751 posts)It is very serious illness.
My point was in reference to how some people here are cheering that its just pneumonia and somehow Clinton health as political issue will go away. The fact Clinton campaign put this out now tells you how much they are concerned by this issue. It was calculated decision to put this out there as its better than speculation about her mental/physical health, but just because this might sound better doesn't mean this issue is bad politics.
If she truely is healthy and has no more incidents, I don't think this is going to be major issue. But another collapse during the debate or some public event might be one of the few avenues in which we have Trump presidency.

(751 posts)Pneumonia is the worlds leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age, accounting for 15% of all deaths of children under 5 years old. There are 120 million episodes of pneumonia per year in children under 5, over 10% of which (14 million) progress to severe episodes. There was an estimated 935,000 deaths from pneumonia in children under the age of five in 2013.
Older people have higher risk of getting pneumonia, and are more likely to die from it if they do. For US seniors, hospitalization for pneumonia has a greater risk of death compared to any of the other top 10 reasons for hospitalization.
The death rate from pneumonia in the US has had little or no improvement since antibiotics became widespread more than half a century ago. We are not yet winning the battle against pneumonia

(2,830 posts)Particularly with the Presidential debates coming up in two weeks this adds fuel to the "Hillary's health is failing." In all likelihoods, she will recover and regain her health. Unfortunately, we're in the crux of the election season and this could be a game changer that could take her off the campaign trail for several weeks during this vitally important period of time.
I do, however, see it as a good thing in regards to answering the reason why she has been having coughing fits.
Personally, I don't think having pneumonia should be a deal changer, after all, we've had several presidents with even more serious conditions. However, the reality is that it could very well erase any gains made by Hillary since the tremendous bump after the conventions.
It's a net loss for her campaign to win the presidency.
