(3,335 posts)They forget that the reason Presidential candidates started showing their returns in the first place because Richard Nixon was audited and found to have substantially underpaid his taxes by his interpretation of certain tax laws. He had also paid a disproportionate amount of fees to his tax preparer than the amount that he originally owed which caused some concern.

(4 posts)A longshot candidate for President on CNN today said it well, "We know Trump's hiding something. The only question is what?" We know for a fact Trump's former campaign manager Manafort had ties to the Kremlin. Trump has praised America's adversary, despite the fact that America's generals named Russia our top security threat.
In the face of this, people, including Republicans, can't help but be curious if ties similar to the one's Manafort had are influencing Trump's judgment. If Trump is going to put his financial interests ahead of the nation's interests, it's important that we know now as opposed to after the election. One reason I think Republicans want to know if there are Kremlin ties is not all Republicans have bought into Trump's whitewashing of Putin's misdeeds. GOP approval of Putin ('favorable') has grown from 10 percent to 24% (although not all on Trump's watch). The percent that views him very unfavorably has dropped from over 50% to just 22%. However, Putin still has a net negative 27 point unfavorable among Republicans, so enough of them want to know if Trump is unduly influenced by business dealings with Russia into supporting someone they distrust.
If Trump has significant business dealings with Russia, to avoid conflict of interest, he would have to divest himself immediately. Much of the business in Russia is state-owned or heavily influenced by the State; before we can make a fair assessment of whether Trump's rose-colored outlook on Russia is colored by financial gains, we have to have more information about the nature of the business deals- which companies, what is their relation to Moscow. I'm not sure we've ever elected as President someone who's sole mission in life was to make money (and not a public servant); there are risks we've downplayed in the past because I don't think we've ever considered that someone could profit so egregiously from the power of the Oval Office esp. when 'profit motive' has guided them first and foremost their entire adult lives.
