This is in part from an e-mail I received from a middle aged woman who NEVER talks about politics...

I was reading the Bible this morning and I found the perfect verse that
explains the success of Donald Trump…
"Even the youths
shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall
utterly fall, But those who wait on
the Lord Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like
eagles, They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint." (Isiah
40:30-31)

It’s almost like God created this verse
for Donald Trump and this moment in history.
Trump is our energy.
More energy than any candidate EVER. He took on the 16 best candidates in
GOP history...all younger than him...all with better political
credentials...and destroyed them with his energy. You mean that kind of
energy in a 70-year old isn't inspired by God?
Trump renews our
strength. Or does the all-time record turnout and all-time record votes for
a GOP presidential primary candidate not define “strength?"
With
Trump we mount up with wings like eagles. With Trump as our leader there is
nothing we can’t do. Any man that can build skyscrapers in Manhattan and
vanquish 16 presidential opponents, while spending almost nothing…can lead
us to the heights of eagles.

3. May I ask the nature of your relationship to this woman?

Has she always been a Bible quoter? Perhaps your acquaintance should read a bit more. Two suggestions come to mind: the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. Then she could reevaluate her admiration for Donald Trump.

Regardless, as a former Christian who had extensive study of the Bible, I can state unequivocally that The Donald has violated nearly every aspect of what Christianity represents. This is especially true regarding his complete lack of repentance without which one cannot be in communion with the Trinity. Accordingly, he is, at best, a lapsed Christian. It's not my point to understand what is in Mr. Trump's heart but his behavior is in complete conflict with the teachings of Jesus.

It eludes me how any true Christian can support Mr. Trump.

Religion and politics just don't come up in our discussions. Group of about 7 - 15 women at times who all worked on a college campus.

It's funny how we sometimes have long-term acquaintances who reveal a part of themselves that is unexpected.

she'd felt faint in the heat due to blood pressure problems. I teased her that she and Hillary Clinton had that in common, if nothing else. She took it as the joke it was, saying that she didn't want anything in common at all with "that evil woman" and repeated the charge a couple times to work off the emotion aroused. I think this is the first time she's actually called her evil, though she's always been emphatically negative.

(Then she wanted to know what was wrong with her, was she drunk, or what, so I took the opening to briefly toss out allergies, cough, walking pneumonia, dehydration, trying to power through and failing. Keeping working no matter what is definitely something this farm woman understands.)

A kennedy, I just bet this surprised you! Religious people ignoring all reality in search of a mystic explanation always surprise me, and they're all over the place here. Lots of anxiety around these days, lots of comforting explanations sought.

in religion and to rejecting objective data for occult, usually but not necessarily biblical "explanations." She's a clinical psychologist, and competent at that, not a stupid woman, but our thoughts have always been on nonintersecting lines and she often surprises me with new examples.

Our neighbor is a lot more down to earth. I like her a lot, and respect her. Not for her political malleability, obviously, but for her many good points. For instance, I've never detected malice in her. She's a nice woman.

In her defense politically, being living her entire life in an intensely conservative and religious region, a rural area with limited education and no cosmopolitan influences, set her up as an easy mark for the true evil ones.

Who cares what drivel they dredge up from the bible?

Its all superstition and demonstrably stupid garbage.

And it shouldn't be demonized or ignored.

It's the animal part of our brain that he's appealing to. The raw, self-preservation, tribal part. The reptile.

And the best way to approach that is examination, exposure, comedy and art.

Think of Oliver's bit about Trump's "tiny hands".
