NYT - Colin Powell, in Hacked Email, Calls Trump ‘National Disgrace’

WASHINGTON — Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, who served as President George W. Bush’s top diplomat, derided Donald J. Trump as a “national disgrace” and an “international pariah” in personal email exchanges that were leaked online Tuesday.

In the emails, reported by BuzzFeed News, Mr. Powell also accuses Mr. Trump, the Republican nominee for president, of having embraced what Mr. Powell called a “racist” movement when he questioned the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate.

An aide to Mr. Powell confirmed the hack and said, “They are his emails.”

“Yup, the whole birther movement was racist,” Mr. Powell wrote in an email to a former aide, according to BuzzFeed. “That’s what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim. As I have said before, ‘What if he was?’ Muslims are born as Americans everyday.”

Oh, Secretary Powell, you had a distinguished career, an admirable career, until your assertion that the Iraqis possess WMD. And these leaked e-mails take you a step further down the ladder.

You are quoted: In that email, Mr. Powell lamented that he had repeatedly told Mrs. Clinton’s “minions” that they are “making a mistake trying to drag me in, yet they still try.” -- Really, what mistake were the aides making? Telling the truth, that you also used private e-mail, even less secure than HRC's. That you were the one who advised her to use private e-mail. That you stood by quietly while she was pilloried for something you also did? Shame on you.

You are also quote: The Associated Press reported that in another leaked email, Mr. Powell, using Mrs. Clinton’s initials, wrote that “Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris.” WTF does that mean? Name one thing that her hubris screwed up. Was it your hubris, or just plain old, bald-faced lying that prompted to to tell Congress that Iraq had WMD? And what has she screwed up that others in her position have not also screwed up in some ways. After all, in a 40-year career in public service, that's damn near inevitable. Is her hubris worse than Donald Trump's racism, bigotry and fascist leanings? And your failure to speak publicly on this issue demonstrates a cowardice that I find shocking and sad in someone of your stature.
