The general of gossip: Colin Powell’s leaked emails depict a juvenile busybody rather than an elder statesman

Colin Powell's immature and silly emails show why he should stay out of the election and maybe start a blog

HEATHER DIGBY PARTON

Who would have ever thought that underneath his staid, sedate elder statesman image that General Colin Powell was a catty Real Housewife of the Potomac? If the emails that were hacked and released to the press this week are any indication, he’s quite the backbiting gossip, with nasty opinions of just about everyone he knows.

For instance, his old friends the Cheneys were probably upset to read what Colin really thinks about them:

“(The Cheneys) are idiots and spent force peddling a book that ain’t going nowhere.”

Meow. And this about Cheney, Rumsfeld and his old boss George H. W. Bush:

“One day when we both have had too many drinks we can discuss why (President George W. Bush) tolerated (Donald Rumsfeld) and why Dick (Cheney), a successful SecDef, was so committed to Don. I must say I gagged as (President George H.W. Bush) praised him as the ‘best’ at the statuary hall unveiling.”

Gag him with a spoon.

these catty e-mails to Condi Rice? Not defending him, but maybe they were close and could let off some steam by talking that way to each other. Now if he was writing those kinds of things to lots of people, different story.

Oh, wait, they do now! Ha.

But seriously, maybe he shouldn't wonder why B*sh did any of the things he did, the man is a stooge. Most of the people I know who I seriously admire or are close to would've made a better president of the United States of America. We are served by his ripping on Trump, so whatever, works for me... I actually am hoping Shrub says Trump isn't fit to serve. Talk about insulting! HA

If he is, then Powell it the tool of an idiot. That is really unflattering to Powell himself.

He lacks a moral compass and always had. Never understood why anyone would admire, like, trust, or respect him.

probably why Powells personal email was "hacked" and dumped on wiki-LEAKS, so he would lose credibility when he endorses and votes for Clinton.

His "dicking bimbos" comment is embarrassing for him and the Clinton's. Its all people will think about in the next 8 weeks when he interviews about the Cray-Cray republican.

At this point with all the 'timed leaks' , IMO I think the Republicans are selectively using/buying hacking services from a foreign government.

Not directly, but they're paying for that information somehow or are already blackmailed from their own hacked private information.

living life between a rock and a hard place, trying to carve out an honorable place for blacks in a changed Republican Party. A job that eventually really, really needs to be done, and he was the decent black conservative of great stature to lead it.

Unfortunately, Power tried to change his party at a time in history when the super rich were using the passions of social and religious extremists to pull the Republican party farther into right-wing extremism that it has EVER been. He was battling against far more powerful forces and lost.

So here he is -- a conservative, a good man, but with all the typical conservative disapproval and resentment of the current Democratic success and also isolated from and rejected by the party he tried to make what it should be.

So, I'll give him bitter and bitchy. I'll even read his disappointingly dishonest and bush-league badmouthing of us without tossing the good Powell out with the bad. These emails, after all, were sent to friends and were never meant to be public.

They do not represent the sum of the man.

Anytime we accept these hacks/wiki-leak dumps as real, we're giving power to them, most of the time used against our side (Assange is a stooge of the alt-right and Putin).

I thought the DNC also made a mistake by accepting the DWS email leaks as authentic, much smarter to deny it.

Especially since it has been proven that many of these wiki dumps are fake/altered.
