Here is why birtherism hurts...

It makes African Americans apoplectic and rightfully so and it upsets white moderates and liberals whose embrace of the Obamas makes them feel better about themselves.

What is the mechanism by how this occurs?

BTW, I am white and it was the most aspirational vote I have ever cast. And as someone of Jewish ancestry I place birtherism up there with blood libel.
