just so we have a clear picture of what a trump win would actually mean:

first, there's obviously no way we're winning the house. it's a long-shot even with a hillary landslide, no way is it happening with a trump win.

second, republicans will keep the senate as well. we have a good chance to win the senate, but not in any scenario where trump wins the white house. just to make it more difficult, a 50-50 tie would go to the republicans with pence :shurdder: as the tie-breaker.

third, the republican strategy of ignoring their constitutional duties and refusing to consider obama's nominee to the supreme court will have paid off for them. who cares if everyone then thinks of the supreme court as a nakedly political institution instead of a place for thoughtful jurisprudence. anyway, one of trump's first acts would be to nominate someone who liberals will hate. it might be someone that confuses everyone, but rest assured, we will hate his choice. and once again, the 5-4 decisions will go their way, not ours. probably for a very long time, especially if, say, ginsberg doesn't last until a democrat can get back in the white house.

the means the republicans will have the white house, the supreme court, and both houses of congress.

that means that the only power we would have left would be the senate filibuster. any guesses as to whether or not republicans will curtail that? my bet is that they'll at least say supreme court nominees can't be filibustered, if they don't do away with it entirely. they know the demographic changes ahead and know this may be their last strech of solid power. they will milk it for all it is worth.

so, for instance, that means, let's see...

- the corporate tax will be severely slashed. this will be very unfair and damaging in the long run, but it will goose the economy in the short run as corporate tax dodgers who have been stashing profits overseas will finally bring the money home. it will also help reduce the federal deficit (again, setting up long-term problems but making it look better in the short term). this will make trump very popular.

- businesses will be allowed to pollute like there's no tomorrow

- business liability will be severely limited. it will be very difficult to get justice in the civil courts, giving businesses a license to rip people off, discriminate, screw suppliers, break contracts, lies in advertising, endanger workers and customers, etc.

- personal tax laws will be greatly "simplified", allowing the rich to pay very, very little taxes without needing to pay tax lawyers tons of money to do so. the rest of us will get screwed again.

- no way trump isn't starting a war or three. peace is not for chest-trumping baboons.

- the war on women and minorities will re-surge in full force, including voting restrictions, medical hassling, etc.

- oh, yeah. obamacare? gone. duh.

- trump will be given credit for unifying a divided republican party. nothing like having control of all three branches to do that.

for the record, i remain rather confident that hillary will win. but just so we all know what's at stake, a trump victory would be vastly worse than simply losing the presidency.
