(47 posts)I did not recognize anyone who appeared in it. I guess it was not aimed for people like me who are not into celebrities.

(6,592 posts)Before I stopped watching, I vaguely recognized about three and knew the name of one.

(47 posts)I have lived in the Caribbean for the last 27 years ( the VI in my name stands for Virgin Islands ) so I have better things to do than watch TV (the beach). We did not even have a movie theater on the island. The funny thing is I worked on Broadway so I knew and palled around with John Travolta, Treat Williams, Marilu Henner, Kelly Bishop, Samuel E. Wright, Bonnie Franklin, and Ann Reinking before they became celebrities. They were just normal people, nothing special and hardly worth noticing.

(11,122 posts)Sooooo cool.
What you don't get is that this (no matter how hard you try to make it) is not about you.
viguy2016
(47 posts)I was explaining why I did not know anyone in the ad.
Jakes Progress
(11,122 posts)since the OP wasn't about how many celebrities we could name or about how we spend our time, what was the purpose of your post? How did your not knowing popular culture add to the discussion?
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)I think you are coming down too hard on him. I recognized 3 of the folks and can only name two. But I am over 50 and just do not go to movies or watch network TV.
Sometimes we fuddy-duddies like to remind others that not everyone keeps up with pop culture.
That said I realize that the ad is aimed at Millennials and I think it is brilliant. Had it been done in 1979 I would have recognized all the stars.
Have a nice evening.

(68,539 posts)It worked for me hilarious. Loved it.

(15,696 posts)I can't imagine being so removed form pop culture. I've known people who didn't own TVs or watch films, but not since the internet age. Is it difficult to avoid media coverage of actors totally? How do you do it?

(21,116 posts)I can't speak for the person you asked.
I know who president Josiah Bartlet is. I recognized him.
How do I do it?
I play Kerbal Space Program and only watch baseball games. The last Movie I saw in the theater was some batman movie which involved climbing out of a pit or some such. . The one I saw before that was the first New Start Trek.
I'm not a pop culture person.
I'm really good at Windows deployment.
I have Asperger Syndrome.

You're not without information there, not by a long shot. If the gentleperson from VI doesn't know what's what or who is who, it's not because the VI lacks sophisticated communication mechanisms...after all, ya can't get to DU without the internet, can ya?

(23,078 posts)They would absolutely recognize Robert Downey Jr. in a nano second. The ad works for me.
ColemanMaskell
(783 posts)They told one of the names during the ad (Mark Ruffalo).
And now that you mention Robert Downey Jr, I do remember seeing his face+name together on some ad or cover.
But the ad wasn't aimed at any of us.
What we CAN do with it is to pass the link along to people we might know who would rather stay home and watch TV than go out and vote . . . It might work.
getagrip_already
(14,674 posts)I can't recognize people by faces. I have face blindness, so I never know who anyone is. Seriously, it's really embarrasing when someone starts talking to you and you have zero idea who they are, though you've probably met them a dozen times.

I showed it to my Millennial son and he knew them all. He's a huge Joss fan. So I guess it was to get people of his age group to register to vote. He said Martin Sheen didn't count because ..Charlie..lol.
So here's a few of them..Keegan-Michael Key, Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Yvette Nicole Brown, Rosie Perez and Leslie Odom Jr.

And they are doing the right thing - so dissing them by saying you don't know who they are says more about you than about them.
viguy2016
(47 posts)I was not being critical of these actors. I am glad they are on our side. But they are just doing their job. No job is special after you have done it for a couple of years. It is not like it is dangerous where they are putting their lives on the line. They have talent but without the director and the writers and other support personnel, you would not know who they are. I could tell some stories, but it would not serve any purpose to do so.
Thor_MN
(11,843 posts)other than bolstering your ego, I question your use of time. After all, you have the beach in the Virgin Islands.

Somehow, sitting on a beach and avoiding people makes him better than the rest of us.
(Now, he never said he thought he was better than us. But then what would be the purpose of his posting that way. Maybe his post was a cry for help, a plea for rescue. Now I'm starting to feel sorry for the guy. Somebody buy this guy a movie ticket an a beer. )

(2,322 posts)...by younger, of age voters, lots of them. It really doesn't matter if we recognize them. They're breaking the fourth wall and admitting that they're using actors to sell this point, thus engaging the viewers, luring them into it, so they laugh and feel that they do matter, and they are in a conversation with these actors, not just being getting a message/lecture. It's funny, heartwarming, serious, and nicely done. If it gets even a small percentage of those movie goers, those comic-con fans, those fans of Whedon tv shows to register and vote, it's all good.
