I doubt that he even knows the truth most of the time. He seems not even to be able to remember which positions he has taken in the past, and seems to just wing it each time, as though he'd never even thought about a question before.

In 33 years as a Union Representative, I always advised the people that I represented to tell the truth. It is easy to remember because it actually happened. Rarely can someone lie well because lies require a rewriting of reality to support the lie.

But Trump's advantage is that he is speaking to people who desperately want to believe that he does have the answers. So his inconsistencies are not important to his true believers.

He might have had a small stroke, or he might have early stage Alzheimer's (his father had Alzheimer's).

He has always had disgusting opinions and attitudes, and he has always behaved deplorably, but these days he has no filter at all. I keep thinking of Sophia on The Golden Girls, whose stroke left her with no filter at all so that she said any outrageous thing that came to her mind.

Of course, it is appalling that so many Americans are so enchanted by the blatherings of someone who cannot prevent himself from spouting things that are simply not said out loud in a civilized society.
