2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDUer running for State Rep
I'm a DUer running for State Rep in a county (Otero County NM) that hasn't elected a Democrat in 22 years! I'm running against a Tea Party rep and we've knocked on over 2,500 doors, working hard...every contribution would help me more than I can express.
Here's my DU contribute page, set up by Omaha Steve
http://secure.actblue.com/page/deniselang2016
I need some DU love! Come visit me...We'd put you to work before the election, could visit White Sands, Cloudcroft, Ruidoso, 'my' canyon, Fresnal Canyon AFTER the election.
My website: https://electdeniselang.com/
Like me, Elect Denise Lang on facebook!
Even Thom Hartmann helped me.

(4,110 posts)It would be too hard to do something different along with all else I had to do. At 65, I can't tell you how overwhelmed I feel at times. But then I wake up!

(54,291 posts)It's not any individual candidate I have anything against, it's Act Blue itself. Half the time they "flag" my contributions for further examination because they come from overseas, even though I have been contributing from the same location under the same name since Act Blue started.
Then there is the problem that many contributions are automatically checked to repeat every month or every week and I only find this out after the fact. Some other people on DU told me that this is done by the individual sites, and not Act Blue. Be that as it may, as most of the Act Blue contribution sites look identical, I never think to look for such a box to uncheck, and at any rate, Act Blue certainly tolerates the practice, which I find underhanded at best. To me, it's a big nuisance. To people who are sending half their monthly paycheck, it's a huge sacrifice as a one-time contribution. If they suddenly find the same amount deducted from their credit card every week, they can find themselves unable to pay the rent or feed their kids next month. I find it a wicked tactic to automatically check these boxes, and expect first-time contributors to look for and uncheck them. I am appalled that Act Blue is a willing accomplice to such a practice.

(53,339 posts)And I quickly got an email confirmation of my contribution noting that it was 'one-time.'
I hope others won't be hesitant to contribute to her campaign.

(4,110 posts)I'll have to let her know! You and I have corresponded here on DU before. My late husband Mike lost both legs at Chu Lai; you lifted me up when I needed it. You are an amazing man.

The amputees had one side and the facial casualties had the other. I might even have met Mike when I visited the amputees on their side. Probably did, at least once.
R.I.P. Mike.

(53,339 posts)You hung in there as long as you could, and when things were really bad you probably were the only positive thing he had in his life then.
They should have a medal for that.

(4,110 posts)...the 'Iraqistan' veterans, their families, their friends, VA, the psychologists & counselors who are basically told to patch them up and send them back to the war to get all the help, all the funding they need. We did then what we knew; when we know better, I want us to do better.

(4,110 posts)The support I felt coming to DU over a decade ago nudged me, strengthened me, gave me courage...made me able to put starch in my backbone. Then get out there and advocate...then run for office.

(53,339 posts)We've seen folks get pie-in-the-sky ideas without the wherewithall to execute them.
But you have a plan and you're out there working hard. Even your "safe" GOP incumbent opponent is worried.
You really have a shot at winning this and gaining another blue seat in the House and we are behind you!

(53,339 posts)I looked up your opponent, a 3-term Republican incumbent. No surprise that she's an anti-union supporter of turning New Mexico into a "right to work" state and wants to turn federal public lands over to the state. Ugh!
Nice to see, though, that even she calls you "a great person." She also sounds worried, telling people how hard you're working to unseat her.
Best of luck in your campaign!

I'm so pro-labor that each endorsement gave me more and more motivation. But it was DU that 'birthed' that tiny voice within and nurtured it. I am so proud of my DU supporters.

(53,339 posts)As for me, googling is easy. I learned from doing CTyankee's art challenges. I'd stay up all night searching, forced to learn about search terms and tweaks.. It was my stubborn conceit that I avoided looking at search tips. I learned the hard way, and got to be pretty good at it. Looking up info on your race is a snap compared to those art challenges.

(53,339 posts)I think it would be great if any DUers going to NM to volunteer for Hillary would plan a day or two to also canvass for you in your district.

(53,339 posts)That seems to guarantee lots of media attention.

(53,339 posts)Having a candidate who has a decent shot at it is a rare opportunity. And props to Denise for going for it against big odds.
We may be focused on Hillary's campaign, but these downballot races also are important.
Hillary and Denise 2016!

(17,312 posts)I'd run myself, but I am I have too many family health issues to allow me to put in full time for a drawn out campaign, let alone serve in legislature. But for those here who can--go for it!

(53,339 posts)She's taking the bull by the horns. It's not for everyone, but some have the ability and the moxie to do it. And in this case, Denise is'working hard and mounting a SERIOUS challenge against the GOP incumbent.
Her campaign is worth contributing to--and I may even go out there to help out on the ground.
