The human race will have to eventually inhabit other planets, Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson said Sunday.
"I mean, the plate tectonics at one point, Africa and South America separated, and I am talking now about the Earth and the fact that we have existed for billions of years and will going forward," Johnson said on ABC's "This Week."
"We do have to inhabit other planets. I mean, the future of the human race ... is space exploration. So, no, we should be prudent with the environment. We care about the environment." The former New Mexico governor was responding to comments of his from 2011 that climate change is a long-term issue and that the sun would eventually encompass the earth.
Johnson vowed to stay in the race even though he won't be part of the first presidential debate on Monday night, saying it's an ongoing process to reach the 15 percent support polling standard to be included.

I don't support Johnson but he's right on this. We will have to become a multi-planetary species in order to stave off eventual extinction. Earth won't last forever.

(17,862 posts)Prudent stewardship will give us at least 500 million years (about the time multi-cellular organisms have existed) on this planet.
Our first priority in space exploration should be developing capability to detect and redirect comets and meteors. We have a fantastic planet here, and we need to protect it. It will be a long time until we can terraform Mars and that is our next best option (note that even Kim Stanley Robinson famous for his Mars novels has backed off on optimistic estimates of Mars terraforming.
Another advantage of redirecting asteroids is access to incredible raw materials.

(40,416 posts)So any terra formed atmosphere would be stripped off by solar wind, just as it happened earlier on Mars. Then, there's the radiation...

(17,862 posts)Perhaps we will have to always live under a dome on Mars.

Humans have not been here very long when compared to earth itself.
And space programs cost lots of money.
