While Andrew Jackson may have been the first president of the modern Democratic Party, his actions towards Native Americans and slavery probably aren't what you want to honor in your title of your annual party dinner.
And Jefferson, despite his many contributions to the founding of the country and who is viewed as the predecessor of the Democratic Party, also condoned slavery (to the point where he fathered children with his slaves).
Basically, I think the party wanted to bring its image up to a more modern, progressive time.

...because they were seen as Democratic Party founders. in the past year or so, the name became disreputable because of their involvement with Slavery.
